Community Heroes Surprised by D.C. Pro Athletes

Community heroes rewarded with an autographed jersey and virtual hangout with their favorite Capitals, Wizards or Mystics player

Whether you’ve experienced professional struggles, the inability to see loved ones, or a halt to certain passions and hobbies (ahem, sports!), COVID-19 has inevitably impacted us all.

Yet, amid the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic, people across the globe have shown courage and resilience in helping others in need. From feeding the hungry to finding innovative ways of teaching to providing essentials to vulnerable populations, Capital One has been inspired by everyday people doing extraordinary things.

As a way of spreading cheer, we asked sports fans in the D.C. metropolitan area to nominate a person they view as a community hero. From there, we selected 10 “heroes” to be rewarded with an authentic autographed jersey signed by their favorite player from the Caps, Wizards, or Mystics.

To further applaud their acts of heroism, Capital One conducted online video calls with each of the winners. Little did they know, we had a fun surprise in store for them. During the call, we patched in Tom Wilson, T.J. Oshie and John Carlson from the Capitals, Natasha Cloud of the Mystics and John Wall, formerly of the Wizards, once-in-a-lifetime virtual hangout. Their reactions were priceless.

From the start of Capital One’s COVID-19 response, the well-being of our associates, customers and communities has been our top priority. We continue to be encouraged by the kindness and generosity of each of these groups during this season. Read more about these D.C. community heroes here!
