How to Cancel & Rebook Trips Made Through Capital One Travel

Plans change because of COVID-19? Learn how to cancel and rebook with travel providers and on Capital One’s self-service site

This article is for bookings made on the previous Capital One Travel site.

Capital One Travel is launching a smarter travel-booking experience with a new travel tech partner, Hopper, this fall. Starting August 26, 2021, at 7 a.m. ET, you’ll be temporarily unable to make new reservations through Capital One Travel until the new travel-booking experience launches—unless you have existing flight credits. Rest assured, you can still use existing flight credits or manage any existing reservations—simply sign in here.

Requirement for international travelers:
Please check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines before booking and departing for your trip. For more information, check the CDC website, Travel.State.Gov or contact your airline.

Airline and travel providers are continually updating their change and cancellation policies because of COVID-19.

Flight Cancellations

If you have a flight coming up, you’re probably wondering how to cancel and whether you’ll get a refund or credit. Capital One is here to help. 

Curious About Specific Airlines’ Policies? 

Cancellation, rebooking and fee-waiver policies differ by airline. You can find the most accurate and up-to-date information by visiting the online airline resources section at the bottom of this article. 

If you were issued a flight credit due to cancelling a reservation, please refer to the airline-specific policy for expiration details. 

Ready to Cancel? Use Capital One’s Self-Service Site

If you booked through the previous Capital One Travel booking experience, follow the steps below to cancel online. This option is currently available for flights with Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.

How Do I Cancel My Flight Online? 

1. Sign in to Capital One Travel. Then, select “My Trips.” 

2. Once you’re on the My Trips page, select the desired trip from your active reservations. 

3. Scroll down to your itinerary and select the parts of your trip you want to cancel. (Please note that you might not be able to cancel some parts of your trip at this time.) Then, follow the instructions on the screen. If you need to cancel multiple parts of your trip—like a flight and a hotel reservation—you’ll need to request cancellation for each reservation, one at a time. Please note, depending on the airline’s policy, cancellations may be subject to fees.

4. After you submit your cancellation request, you’ll receive an email from Capital One. If you don’t see the email within a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder. 

5. Capital One will process your cancellation as soon as possible and send you another email to confirm. Capital One will automatically detect whether your trip qualifies for a cancellation fee waiver at the time of your cancellation. If it does qualify, the refund or credit will be processed based on the airline’s policy. Remember: If you booked two one-way flights instead of a round-trip flight, you might have booked through different airlines with separate fee-waiver policies. 

What If I Can’t Cancel My Flight Online? 

For additional support, or if you booked with a different airline, please call Capital One Travel directly at 844-527-6779. It helps to have your Trip ID number ready. You can find it by selecting your trip itinerary under “My Trips” in Capital One Travel. 

What If I Want to Change My Flight? 

If you have canceled your flight and know your preferred new travel dates, you can sign in to Capital One Travel and select “My Trips” to begin the rebooking process. 

For additional support, please call Capital One Travel directly at 844-527-6779. Many airlines are currently allowing you to change your flight plans once without paying a fee. But if you need to change your flight a second time, you might have to pay a fee unless a different credit policy applies. These credits might only be available if you change your flight within 12 months of booking. 

It’s a good idea to check your airline’s current policy about rebooking. If your airline hasn’t issued a policy and you still want to change your flight, call Capital One Travel for help. 

Hotel & Car Rental Cancellations

Most hotel bookings made through Capital One Travel are refundable until 72 hours before check-in. And most car rental reservations can be canceled up until 48 hours before the reservation. 

You can cancel or change your reservations by signing in to Capital One Travel, going to My Trips and finding your reservation. 

If you’re less than 72 hours away from your hotel check-in or less than 48 hours from your rental car pickup time, you’ll have to call Capital One Travel at 844-527-6779 to cancel or change your reservation.

Booking Restrictions

Cardholders are currently unable to book trips through Capital One Travel to China, Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. For more information about COVID-19 and country-specific travel restrictions, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Capital One will continue monitoring the situation and will alert you to important changes. 

Airline Cancellation & Rebooking Policies

If you cancel your flight, you’ll be issued either a credit or a refund if you’re eligible. Keep in mind that airline policies vary and not all cancellations will qualify for credits or refunds. But you can always check your airline’s website for up-to-date information about their policies and your options.

If you receive an airline credit, please note:

  • Airline credits are worth the original purchase price of the ticket, and they’re being issued for the same passengers on the same airline as the original booking.
  • You can only use the credit to rebook one flight through Capital One Travel. If your new fare costs less than your original booking, you’ll forfeit the remaining value of your credit. Capital One Travel is unable to issue additional airline travel credits. But you might be able to use your credit for more than one flight by calling the airline directly.
  • Depending on the airline’s policy, you might need to pay the difference between the current ticket price and the original ticket value when you rebook.
  • When rebooking your flight, the airline may charge a rebooking fee.
  • Credits are typically valid for up to one year from the original purchase date. But it depends on the airline’s policies. Some airlines are extending the validity period for credits because of COVID-19. But any credit that isn’t used by the end of the validity period will be forfeited to the airline.
  • Remember that policies differ by airline, and the most accurate and up-to-date information can be found either by calling the airline directly or visiting the airline’s website.

If you receive a refund, please note:

  • Your refund will be issued to the original method of payment.
  • If you used your rewards to purchase the ticket(s), your rewards will be refunded to your account. It typically takes up to two billing cycles for Capital One Travel to receive the refund from the airline and for it to appear in your account.
  • If your original form of payment is unavailable, Capital One Travel will issue the refund in the form of a check. And that check will be sent to the billing address on file. It can take up to 90 days for the check to arrive, and it’ll be sent after Capital One Travel has received the refund from the airline.
