Changes to instant transfers

Understand changes to how you can make instant transfers with your debit card.

Capital One is switching its debit card network. As part of this network switch, you’ll get a new debit card in the mail soon.

There will be changes to the ways instant transfers are enabled—some merchants or payroll providers may no longer support instant transfers into Capital One checking accounts with your new debit card. These changes are because of the network that new debit cards will be on.

Explore the FAQs to learn more about these changes and how you can prepare for them.

There are many ways to move money from an external source into checking accounts. If you choose an option that lets you transfer money instantly, or in near-real-time, to your checking account, it’s possible that the transfer was made using your debit card. Some examples include:

  • When you receive money from a paycheck faster through a third-party payroll provider, like Branch Messenger and PayActiv
  • When you make an instant transfer from merchants, including Venmo or PayPal
  • When you withdraw or move earnings from business accounts, like Ebay, to an external account

This change will only impact transfers that are made with debit cards, and not all merchants will be impacted. Some merchants, like CashApp, will still allow you to make instant transfers with your new debit card.

We recommend that you reach out directly to the merchants for support. Some may still offer instant transfer options that don’t involve using a debit card, or you can explore what other options may be available to you. You could also attempt to make an instant transfer at the merchants and payroll providers you typically use to see if they still support instant transfers.

There may be other transfer options available that don’t require you to use your debit card. Reach out directly to merchants—some may still offer other instant transfer options that don’t require a debit card. Many merchants also offer ACH transfer options, which typically take 1-3 business days for money to be in your checking account. This may be a good option if you don’t need access to your money right away.

  • If you use PayPal or Venmo, you can still get your money instantly without a debit card by connecting your bank account instead. These merchants also offer ACH transfer options.
  • If you use MetaPay, there are other transfer options available, including linking a credit card or connecting to a PayPal account.
  • If you use Apple Cash, you can still transfer money through ACH.

Reach out directly to merchants for the most accurate and up-to-date transfer options available, and to review any applicable terms.

Certain payroll providers, including Branch Messenger and PayActiv, may not support instant transfers with your new debit card. Reach out directly to your employer’s payroll provider to see whether they’ll allow instant transfers, or to explore other options that may be available to you.

Most payroll or cash access providers offer ACH transfer options so you can continue to get money from your employer directly into your checking account. The ACH transfer option may take 1-3 business days for money to be available in your checking account.
