It's important to know what travel protection benefits come with your credit card and how to take advantage of them. Cardholder benefits vary by card, and using them may require contacting the benefit administrator rather than Capital One.
Examples of travel-related cardholder benefits include:
-
Trip cancellation/interruption insurance: Reimbursement for pre-paid, non-refundable travel via common carrier expenses if your trip is canceled or cut short due to a covered event
-
Trip delay insurance: Reimbursement for reasonable expenses, such as meals and accommodations if your trip is delayed for a covered reason
-
Baggage delay insurance: Reimbursement for essential purchases if your baggage is delayed for a certain period
-
Lost luggage insurance: Reimbursement for the value of your luggage and its contents if lost or stolen
-
Rental car insurance: Primary or secondary coverage for damage to a rental car, also referred to as Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver or MasterRental Coverage
-
Travel accident insurance: Provides benefits in the event of accidental death or dismemberment while traveling via a common carrier
-
Waived international transaction fees: International transaction fees waived on typical charges for using your credit card for purchases in a foreign country or currency

Before you travel
-
Save important documents. Keep physical and/or digital copies of your credit card agreement or benefits information, your travel plans and receipts for travel purchases in case you need them.
-
Review your contact information. Make sure your contact information is accurate, and if traveling internationally, make sure you’ll have phone coverage or WiFi access in the event you need to receive two-factor authentication codes to your phone.
-
No need to notify. Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, you generally don’t need to contact Capital One or your card network before you travel to use your card or be eligible for travel protection benefits.
Filing a claim
If you experience a covered event while traveling:
-
Contact the benefit administrator as soon as possible. You can find this information for your credit card network in your Cardholder Benefits Guide.
-
Gather necessary documentation. This may include travel receipts, rental agreements, medical documentation and police reports (if applicable). You may need to upload or mail documents to validate your claim.
-
Follow the claims process. The benefit administrator will provide you with the specific actions and steps you need to take to properly file your claim.
After you file a claim
After you file a claim and provide all of the requested documentation, you’ll typically receive reimbursement on approved claims for covered events or expenses within 5 days. Contact the benefit administrator in your Cardholder Benefits Guide if you have questions about your claims status. Capital One does not have access to information regarding claims.
