How does Capital One determine which purchases qualify for cash back?
Every time you buy something, the merchant assigns your purchase a category code. We use these codes to figure out how much cash back you earn. Please note, Capital One is not responsible for codes used by merchants.
Some merchants that sell food and drinks that are located within larger establishments (such as hotel restaurants or grocery store food counters) as well as some food trucks or food carts may not categorize themselves as dining merchants.
Purchases made through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, mobile or digital wallets or similar technology may not receive a higher percentage reward, depending on how the technology is set up to process the purchase.
What counts as a grocery store?
A supermarket, meat locker, freezer, dairy product store and specialty market. Excludes superstores like Walmart® and Target®.
What counts as dining?
Purchases at restaurants, cafes, bars, lounges, fast-food chains and bakeries.
What counts as entertainment?
Ticket purchases made at movie theaters, sports promoters (professional and semi-professional live events), theatrical promoters, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, zoos, dance halls, record stores, pool halls or bowling alleys. This excludes golf courses, collegiate sporting events and non-industry entertainment merchant codes like cable, digital streaming and membership services.

The 8% cash back on Capital One Entertainment purchases includes tickets purchased on the Capital One Entertainment ticketing platform only, paid for with an eligible Capital One Savor card. The 8% excludes: tickets purchased through Capital One cardholder exclusive pre-sales; (ii) tickets purchased directly through the Capital One Hall or Capital One Arena ticketing services; and (iii) dining reservations or purchases through Capital One Dining. Your account must be open and in good standing to earn cash back and cash back earned will post to your account within 1-2 billing cycles. Cash back earned will be reclaimed if you cancel or return an eligible purchase, and the offer is valid for consumer, non-commercial use only. Cash back rewards are subject to the terms and conditions disclosed when you opened your account and any subsequent amendments. Online account required. - 5Eligible cardholders must enroll through the unique Benefits Tab link found within the Capital One website or mobile app after logging in. Cardholders can find the link to enroll by visiting their eligible card’s Rewards tab or Capital One Travel Benefits tab and by clicking on the Hertz benefit tile. Upon doing so, a new webpage will open; there, Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders will be able to enroll directly in or request an upgrade to Hertz President’s Circle status and Venture, VentureOne, Savor, Savor Student, Quicksilver, Quicksilver Student, Spark Miles and Spark Miles Select cardholders will be able to enroll directly in or request an upgrade to Hertz Five Star status. Age restrictions apply. After successful registration, Hertz will process the request and status will be effective 24-72 hours after registration. Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g. enrolling directly at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier. Cardholders must go through the above process to be successfully enrolled. Upon enrollment, eligible cardholders will remain at that status level through the duration of the offer, at which point they will be reverted to the level commensurate with Hertz standard usage policies.
