What’s a card network?
A card network is simply a company, such as Mastercard, Visa or Discover®, that processes credit card transactions.
Is one card network better than the other?
Card networks have some minor differences in how they process transactions and the network benefits they offer, but otherwise they’re essentially the same.
What happens when a card network changes?
A card network change simply means that a different company will be processing your credit card transactions. It doesn’t affect credit scores, card terms, rewards, credit limits or card function.
Why do card networks change?
Networks can change for many reasons, like technical changes, business improvements or service updates. However, they won’t affect your status as a cardholder. Credit scores, rewards, credit limits and APRs are not affected.
What happens to my other card?
To help protect against fraud, your other card will expire early and stop working. This means your card may stop working before the expiration date. You’ll receive an email telling you the date your card will expire.
Will my Annual Percentage Rate (APR) be affected?
No, your APR won't be affected by the card network change.
Will my rewards change?
Nope! All of your rewards will carry over to the new card, and you’ll earn the same rewards that you do now.
Will my credit limit change?
Not at all. Credit limits are separate from network changes, so they’re not affected.
Will my credit card number change?
Yes, your card will have a new number, expiration date and security code.
Will my network benefits change?
Some benefits might change depending on the network. You’ll receive information about your new benefits with your new card. In the meantime, you can view the Visa and Mastercard benefits guides here.
Where can I use my new card?
You can use your new card at any retailer or service that accepts your new network.
What do I need to do?
The most important thing is to activate the replacement card as soon as it arrives.
Next, you should destroy your other card. If your card is metal, send it back to us in the envelope we provided, and we'll take care of the rest.
Lastly, update your card number and virtual card numbers on any electronic payments you've set up, including digital wallets like Apple Pay®.
Do I need to create or update my Capital One online account?
No, your new card information will be updated to your current account.
Do I have to reapply, and will you pull my credit report?
Not at all. A network change is just an update to your current account, so there's no need to reapply, and we do not pull your credit report.
Can I still keep my card image?
If your current card has an image, your updated card will have the same image.
I haven’t received my replacement card. What do I do?
