Google Pay is a digital payment method that allows you to pay in stores and online with cards you’ve added to Google Wallet. After adding an eligible Capital One credit card to Google Wallet, you can also check out with virtual cards on Chrome and in Android apps on any device where you’re logged in to your Google Account. iOS users can also use virtual cards through Chrome for iOS.  

Google Wallet is a digital wallet that lets you store everything in one place on your Android or Wear OS device such as payment cards, transit passes, tickets and more. You can use your Google Wallet to tap to pay anywhere you see the Google Pay or contactless symbols.

You can add a card to Google Wallet online at wallet.google.com or to the Google Wallet app on your device. Then, follow the instructions in the app. Once your payment methods are added to Google Wallet, here’s how you can make payments with Google Pay: 

• Pay in store: Google Pay works anywhere contactless payments are accepted. Just unlock your Android device and hold it near the reader until you see a check mark.  

• Pay in apps and on the web: Use Google Pay to check out quickly across your favorite apps and sites. Once you save a card, you don’t need to enter your payment info again. Just choose Google Pay at checkout, confirm your purchase and you’re all set. 

Google Pay is currently available for most Capital One credit and debit cards. Some cards may be ineligible at this time (e.g. some partner cards, etc).

Most likely, the first card you added to Google Wallet will automatically set as your default payment option—but you can
change it. Here’s how to select your Capital One card as your default payment method:

1. Open the Google Wallet app on your device.
2. Swipe through your cards at the top of the screen, and tap the preferred card.
3. Tap the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
4. Choose Make default for tap to pay.

You can use Google Pay at millions of businesses. Pay in apps, on websites, at gas stations and restaurants, and anywhere contactless payments are accepted. 

Google Pay works on Android devices running Pie 9.0 or above and OS devices running Chrome. Smartwatches must be running Wear OS version 2.0 or above. To make in-store payments, your Android phone or watch must also support NFC. Check for NFC by looking for it in your phone’s Settings app. You can make in-app payments even if your phone doesn’t have NFC.   

Yes, when you use Google Pay, you still have all the Capital One card benefits you normally do, including $0 Fraud Liability Coverage. 

Your credit and debit card numbers stored in Google Wallet are assigned unique virtual account numbers that are used at checkout, so your full card details are never shared with a store. This is known as tokenization—think of it as a digital stand-in for your physical card’s information. To view the last four or five digits of your virtual account number go to Card details or Transaction details. 

In most instances, a return should work with Google Pay the same as it would if you had inserted or swiped a regular card. The key difference is that instead of the merchant having to swipe your card again you’ll have to hold your phone near the payment terminal again to verify the return. Be sure to check that the card selected in Google Pay is the one that you used for the original purchase. 

In some cases, you may also be asked for the last few digits of your card number. If this happens, you should provide the last few digits of your virtual account number. To view the last four or five digits of the virtual account number, go to Card details or Transaction details. 

Some merchants may require your physical card to process the refund. Depending on the return and refund policies of the store, it may take up to several days for the return transaction to appear on your card statement. 

While your phone is unlocked, it can be used to make purchases in stores. If your phone is lost or stolen, you can find, lock or erase it using Find My Device.

If you lock your device, Google Pay can’t be used. Since Google Pay doesn’t store your card details on your phone, anyone who finds or steals your phone won’t be able to access that information, even if it’s unlocked.

Google Pay is a secure way to pay online, and using virtual cards with Google Pay can take online shopping security even further. If you add an eligible Capital One card to your Google Account, you can choose to pay with a virtual card when you check out on Chrome or in Android apps. These virtual cards are linked to your credit card account, but use a unique number to help protect your account when you shop online.

When using Google Pay, you may be asked to verify the CVV, which is the 3-digit security code on the back of your credit card.
