Traveling with debit card

What to expect when using your debit or ATM card abroad

Planning to travel internationally with your Capital One debit or ATM card? You’ll need to plan ahead to ensure that your card will be accepted in the country you’re traveling to and that you’ll have access to cash. Here are some ways to prepare for upcoming travel:

Before you go:

You’ll want to first familiarize yourself with what network your card is on as this will help with your planning. You can confirm this information by looking at the back of your card.

Research your destination:

  • Before you travel, research which payment methods are most commonly accepted with merchants and at ATMs in your travel destination. Use the following tools and do your own research to ensure that you are prepared:

    •  If your debit or ATM card is on the Discover® Network:

      • Look for ATMs in your place of travel.

      • Check out information on coverage and likely acceptance by region. Select countries may have travel guides to help you plan.

    • If your debit or ATM card is on the MasterCard® Network:

      • Look for ATMs in your place of travel

Be prepared with a backup payment:

Bring a second form of payment wherever you travel–credit card, cash or any other method– just in case.

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date:

While you no longer need to tell us about your travel plans inside or outside of the United States, you’ll want to sign in to your account to ensure your email address and phone number are current before you go. We’ll monitor your accounts and alert you if we see anything suspicious.

While abroad:

  • If your card is on the Discover Network:

    • Look for the Discover or Diners Club International® logos at merchants. Your debit card should work at any of these locations. Check the back of your card if you are not familiar with what these logos look like.

    • In North America and the Caribbean, look for ATMs displaying the Discover or PULSE® acceptance marks.

    • Outside of North America and the Caribbean, look for ATMs with the Discover or Diners Club International acceptance mark.

  • If your card is on the MasterCard® network:

    • Look for the MasterCard® logo at merchants. Your debit card should work at any of these locations.

    • Look for ATMs with the MasterCard® acceptance mark.

  • Keep in mind, even if you don’t see any of these logos, you can still try to use your card. It might still be accepted.

  • Remember to always have your second form of payment handy so you’re prepared.
