The Chevrolet Volt was a groundbreaking car, equipped with an electric motor and a gasoline engine. The Volt was unique in that after the battery reached its minimum state of charge, a gas-fueled engine started up to provide power. The gas engine didn't provide direct propulsion except in limited circumstances. Most of the time, the Volt's drivetrain converted the engine's power into electricity to move the car. The first-generation Volt offered 35 miles of electric range and 380 miles of total range. The second-generation Volt arrived in 2016 with 53 miles of electric range and 420 miles of total range. The redesigned Volt had more conventional styling and additional passenger capacity, but at 10.6 cu.ft. the trunk was no larger than the original. Four years after the second-generation Volt debuted, it went out of production as General Motors prepared to launch its first wave of electric vehicles.
