With the technologically advanced i8, BMW blazed a trail within the exotic sports car segment. Moreover, during the i8’s seven-year production run, BMW sold more than 20,000 examples of the sports car all around the world. The BMW i8 offered the car in coupe and convertible body styles, each equipped with a mid-mounted turbocharged three-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels. An electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack powered the front wheels. When driven only on electricity, the i8 was a front-drive vehicle with up to 18 miles of range. Used as a hybrid, it had all-wheel drive and could accelerate to 60 mph in as little as 4.2 seconds, according to BMW.
