Mercedes dived into the full-size, three-row SUV segment pool with the GL-Class. The first-generation GL arrived in 2007, featuring rugged looks, premium interior materials, good on-pavement driving dynamics, and decent off-roading capability. Gas and diesel engines paired with 4Matic four-wheel drive (4WD), and Mercedes regularly updated the GL between 2007 and 2012. A redesign arrived in 2013, but the new GL looked similar to the former, had standard 4WD, and offered a choice between gas and diesel engines. This time around, though, an AMG-tuned performance model joined the lineup. Mercedes also improved the SUV’s infotainment and safety systems. When Mercedes refreshed the second-generation GL-Class in 2017, it also renamed the SUV the GLS-Class to better reflect its flagship position status.
