How does Capital One determine which purchases qualify for cash back?
Every time you buy something, the merchant assigns your purchase a category code. We use these codes to figure out how much cash back you earn. Please note, Capital One is not responsible for codes used by merchants.
Some merchants that sell food and drinks that are located within larger establishments (such as hotel restaurants or grocery store food counters) as well as some food trucks or food carts may not categorize themselves as dining merchants.
Purchases made through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, mobile or digital wallets or similar technology may not receive a higher percentage reward, depending on how the technology is set up to process the purchase.
What counts as a grocery store?
A supermarket, meat locker, freezer, dairy product store and specialty market. Excludes superstores like Walmart® and Target®.
What counts as dining?
Purchases at restaurants, cafes, bars, lounges, fast-food chains and bakeries.
What counts as entertainment?
Ticket purchases made at movie theaters, sports promoters (professional and semi-professional live events), theatrical promoters, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, zoos, dance halls, record stores, pool halls or bowling alleys. This excludes golf courses, collegiate sporting events and non-industry entertainment merchant codes like cable, digital streaming and membership services.
What counts as streaming?
Streaming purchases made from eligible music and video streaming services, including but not limited to Netflix ®, Hulu ® and Disney +. Some services such as Verizon FIOS On Demand, audiobook subscriptions, and fitness programming are excluded.

Cardholders can find the link to enroll by visiting their eligible card’s Rewards tab or Capital One Travel Benefits tab and by clicking on the Hertz benefit tile. Upon doing so, a new webpage will open; there, Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders will be able to enroll directly in or request an upgrade to Hertz President’s Circle status and Venture, VentureOne, Savor, Savor Student, Quicksilver, Quicksilver Student, Spark Miles and Spark Miles Select cardholders will be able to enroll directly in or request an upgrade to Hertz Five Star status. Age restrictions apply. After successful registration, Hertz will process the request and status will be effective 24-72 hours after registration. Eligible VentureOne, Savor and Quicksilver primary account holders will receive a one-time $100 Capital One Travel credit (“Credit”) to use toward purchases made through Capital One Travel. The Credit will expire after the first year of account opening, on the account open date anniversary. The Credit will be available within Capital One Travel and can be applied to purchases at checkout. The Credit may be used in whole for a single purchase or in part over multiple purchases. Rewards will not be earned on the Credit. If the purchase using the Credit is canceled, the Credit will be restored if it is not expired. An expired Credit will not be restored upon cancellation of the purchase by the customer. The account must be open and in good standing to receive or use the Credit.
In addition to the travel Credit, eligible VentureOne primary account holders can earn 20,000 bonus miles, equivalent to $200 for travel purchases, if they spend $500 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. Eligible Savor and Quicksilver primary account holders can earn a $200 cash bonus once they spend $500 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.
