Car Overview
Mercedes-Benz G-Class
What do the Pope, pop stars, and dictators have in common? They’re all fans of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Affectionately known as the G-Wagen (a derivation of the model’s original Geländewagen name), the boxy G-Class started life in the 1970s as an Austrian-built military off-roading vehicle. After adding leather, wood, and other luxury fittings, Mercedes officially started selling the G-Class in the U.S. at the start of the 21st century. Nearly two decades later, for the 2019 model year, Mercedes finally fully redesigned the G-Wagen for the first time. The automaker kept the original look and rugged go-anywhere capabilities, but infused the five-passenger SUV with newfound layers of sophistication and driving dynamism.
