The Honda Element was a CR-V-based crossover SUV developed for outdoor enthusiasts. All new for 2003, the boxy Element was unapologetically utilitarian. Composite body panels added ruggedness and durability, and its unusual clamshell side doors made loading and unloading easier. Inside, waterproof-fabric seats folded down into a nearly flat position, and owners could fold the rear seats against the sides of the cabin or remove them altogether. The cavernous interior held up to 77.1 cu-ft of cargo room and easily accommodated surfboards and mountain bikes. Scratch-resistant urethane-coated flooring made cleanups simple, and in 2010, Honda introduced a dog-friendly package. For all its endearing practicality, the Element was no match for the more popular CR-V. As a result, Honda discontinued the Element after the 2011 model year
