2022 Ford Expedition Review and Test Drive

Capital One plans to evaluate and review this vehicle during the current model year. Therefore, we will update this page with driving impressions later.

What’s New for the 2022 Ford Expedition?

Ford makes numerous changes to the 2022 Expedition, starting with revised exterior styling, new wheel designs, and an updated interior with a new dashboard and infotainment systems.

Standard equipment includes next-generation Sync 4 with a 12-inch touchscreen display. Sync 4A is available and features a larger 15.5-inch touchscreen mounted portrait-style on the dashboard. Ford Power Up over-the-air updates improve the software over time. A new 22-speaker high-end audio system is available and fills the Expedition with 360-degree surround sound.

An upgraded rear-seat entertainment system is also available, employing dual high-definition touchscreens with 16GB of storage. You can stream video or music, play games, and view downloaded programming. You can even pause programming you’re enjoying from your couch and then continue watching it in the SUV.

New safety technologies also debut, including Ford’s hands-free BlueCruise system. It pairs adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance and is approved for use on specific limited-access highways that Ford calls Hands-Free Blue Zones. In addition, Ford expands upon its existing Co-Pilot360 advanced driving assistance systems with new Road Edge Detection, Intersection Assist, and Evasive Steering Assist systems.

Timberline trim is new for 2022, giving the Expedition enhanced off-roading capability. Visually, it sets itself apart with orange accents inside and out and gets a unique grille, exclusive dark-finish aluminum wheels, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. The Expedition Timberline provides 10.6 inches of ground clearance and improved approach and departure angles thanks to a lifted off-road suspension. Ford also installs an underbody skid plate from the F-150 Raptor and equips the Timberline with a 2-speed transfer case and a high-output twin-turbo 3.5L V6 making 440 hp and 510 lb.-ft. of torque. Trail Control is standard and is an off-road cruise control system for use at low speeds. Trail Turn Assist helps to tighten the SUV’s turning radius for improved maneuverability on trails.

Ford also offers a Stealth Performance Edition package for the Expedition Limited and Limited MAX. It has the same high-output twin-turbo V6 as the Timberline, plus 22-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a dual exhaust system, and red brake calipers. Gloss-black exterior detailing sets this version of the SUV apart.

If you’re planning to leverage the Expedition’s impressive towing capacity, you’ll want the next-generation Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0 technology, which now offers what Ford claims is improved automation of functionality.

My first word was “car.” That’s what I’m told, anyway. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with them. The design. The engineering. The performance. And the purpose. I’m a car enthusiast who loves to drive, but I’m also most interested in the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people actually buy. Anybody can tell you that a sports car is fast. What you need to know is whether or not you should buy that new SUV, and why. My life purpose is to help you make that decision.
