Review QuickTakes:

The last time Toyota redesigned the Sequoia, George W. Bush was the president of the United States. Of course, the automaker has updated and refined the full-size, 8-passenger SUV over the years, but the 2022 Toyota Sequoia is fundamentally the same vehicle it was in the fall of 2007.

2022 Toyota Sequoia Configurations

There are six different versions of the 2022 Sequoia available to full-size SUV shoppers:

  • Sequoia SR5 — The SR5 is the base version of the Sequoia, but it’s nicely equipped. Highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic high-beam LED headlights, heated side mirrors, a wiper de-icer system, a power sunroof, running boards, and a roof rack. Inside, triple-zone automatic climate control and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard. In addition, technology includes a 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone mirroring, satellite radio, connected services, and a Toyota Safety Sense collection of driving assistance and collision avoidance systems
  • Sequoia TRD Sport — For a sportier appearance, the TRD Sport adds fog lights, black mirror caps, black badges, and black 20-inch alloy wheels. This version also has standard second-row captain’s chairs
  • Sequoia Limited — Limited trim builds on the SR5 with machined-finish 20-inch alloy wheels, extra chrome trim, fog lights, and a power liftgate. This version also has leather seats with 10-way power driver’s seat and 6-way power front passenger’s seat adjustment, rear side window shades, a larger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, and upgraded stereo speakers
  • Sequoia Nightshade — The Nightshade includes Limited trim with a blacked-out exterior treatment and standard captain’s chairs in place of the second-row bench seat
  • Sequoia TRD Pro — Essentially, the TRD Pro is a blend of TRD Sport and Limited equipment, combined with serious off-roading hardware, including standard 4WD, 18-inch forged aluminum wheels, unique suspension tuning, a TRD front skid plate, and minor design and utility modifications
  • Sequoia Platinum — The most luxurious version of the Sequoia includes Limited features plus unique 20-inch alloy wheels, minor exterior appearance upgrades, simulated wood interior accents, perforated leather upholstery, a premium sound system, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Comfort upgrades include heated and ventilated front seats, power thigh support adjustment for the driver’s seat, and heated second-row captain’s chairs

What’s New for the 2022 Toyota Sequoia?

Aside from a new Wind Chill Pearl exterior paint color that replaces the previous Blizzard Pearl and Super White hues, Toyota makes no changes to the 2022 Sequoia. However, considering that the Tundra pickup truck on which it is historically based got a complete redesign for 2022, chances are good that the 2023 Sequoia will be all-new, too.

Toyota Sequoia Competitors for 2022

With the 2022 Sequoia, Toyota competes against other full-size SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, Jeep Wagoneer, and Nissan Armada. In terms of their design, engineering, and technology, each rival is more modern than the Toyota, and most are more fuel-efficient. The Toyota’s talents reside mainly in its roomy accommodations and reputation for reliability.

My first word was “car.” That’s what I’m told, anyway. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with them. The design. The engineering. The performance. And the purpose. I’m a car enthusiast who loves to drive, but I’m also most interested in the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people actually buy. Anybody can tell you that a sports car is fast. What you need to know is whether or not you should buy that new SUV, and why. My life purpose is to help you make that decision.
