Review QuickTakes:

Able to seat as many as nine people, carry up to 144.7 cu. ft. of cargo, or tow a trailer weighing 7,800 lbs, the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size, three-row SUV that is ready forwork or play. Gas and diesel powertrains are available, along with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and multiple trim levels deliver everything from the essentials to unexpected luxuries.

What’s New for the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban?

Just one year after a complete redesign, the Chevy Suburban gets a new Google Built-in infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel when you select any version of the SUV except for LS trim.

All 2022 Suburban models have standard lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a new Buckle to Drive feature, which ensures teen drivers are strapped in before they can drive the SUV. In addition, front and rear parking sensors are standard, and Chevy includes reverse automatic braking on the top trims.

Chevrolet also adds more trailering camera views, expands the availability of the larger 6.2L V8 engine option, and offers a new electronic limited-slip differential for the off-road-oriented Z71 trim level. Three new paint colors round out the changes to the 2022 Suburban.

How Much is a Chevrolet Suburban?

This year, 2022 Chevy Suburban prices range from the mid $50,000s to the mid $70,000s, including the destination charge to ship the SUV from the Arlington, Texas assembly plant that builds it to your local dealership.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Trim Levels and Configurations

Depending on how you equip a Suburban, it can carry seven, eight, or nine people in three rows of seats. Six trim levels are available, with their primary differences outlined below:

Chevrolet Suburban LS — There is plenty of value packed into a Suburban LS. This version of the SUV comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a 5.3L V8 engine, remote engine starting, LED headlights and taillights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated side mirrors. In addition, the interior features triple-zone automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats.

There is plenty of technology aboard the most basic ‘Burban. The infotainment system includes an 8-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, satellite radio, and connected services, including access to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Chevy Safety Assist is also standard, equipping the Suburban with a forward-collision warning system with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. You also get Teen Driver technology, which produces a driving report card for parents, as well as a related new Buckle to Drive feature. A rear-seat reminder system is standard, too.

Chevrolet Suburban LT — Select the Suburban LT, and you’ll get a Google-based infotainment system with a larger 10.2-inch touchscreen display. It comes with advanced voice recognition and connected navigation service, and Chevrolet also equips the LT with a nine-speaker Bose premium sound system and wireless smartphone charging.

A 12-inch digital instrumentation display is also standard for this model, and the Suburban LT adds leather seats, heated front seats, improved exterior and interior trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a hands-free power rear liftgate.

Chevrolet Suburban Z71 — Chevy makes the Suburban Z71 for people who go off-road. It includes LT equipment plus a 4WD system with a two-speed transfer case, hill descent control, a front skid plate, and a reworked front end to improve the SUV’s approach angle. Additionally, it rides on exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with all-terrain tires and has blacked-out trim elements, black roof rails, black side step rails, and red recovery hooks.

Chevrolet Suburban RST — For a sporty appearance, the Suburban RST starts with LT trim and adds 22-inch alloy wheels, blacked-out exterior trim, and a black interior with perforated leather and red contrast stitching.

Chevrolet Suburban Premier — Premier trim builds on the Suburban LT with 20-inch polished alloy wheels, a Magnetic Ride Control adaptive damping suspension, a dual exhaust system, and the Z71’s two-speed transfer case and hill descent control system.

On the outside, the Premier has extra chrome trim and power-folding side mirrors with auto-dimming glass, turn-signal indicators, and puddle lighting. Inside, this trim level offers perforated leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs, and power-folding third-row seats. Chevy also adds a memory function to remember the driver’s preferences, including for the power tilt-and-telescopic heated steering wheel.

Premier trim has a power sliding center console and an upgraded ten-speaker Bose Centerpoint surround-sound system. Safety improvements include standard blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-change alert, and a Safety Alert Seat that vibrates to get the driver’s attention when a potential threat exists.

Chevrolet Suburban High Country — The High Country trim is the most luxurious model. It comes with your choice between a 6.2L V8 and a 3.0L turbocharged diesel six-cylinder engine and has exclusive exterior design details, including a set of chrome 22-inch wheels. Additional highlights include a head-up display, a camera-based rearview mirror, a surround-view camera system, and a rear pedestrian alert system.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Review and Test Drive

Capital One plans to evaluate and review this vehicle during the current model year. Therefore, we will update this page with driving impressions later.

Is the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban a Good SUV?

Since the first Suburban went on sale in the 1930s, it has served as a favorite solution to transportation for large families. A redesign for the 2021 model year produced significant gains in third-row seat legroom and comfort, cargo space, and overall sophistication, while an affordable turbo-diesel engine option allows a 2022 Suburban to average 22-23 mpg in combined driving, fuel economy numbers that can rival smaller and lighter vehicles. But a new Chevy Suburban isn’t particularly affordable, so unless you absolutely require this full-size SUV’s maximum towing capacity, you’re still better served by a minivan or a larger crossover like a Chevrolet Traverse.

Chevrolet Suburban Competitors for 2022

Essentially, the Chevrolet Suburban is an extended version of a Chevrolet Tahoe with a longer wheelbase. It has just two direct competitors in the large SUV segment: the Ford Expedition Max and the GMC Yukon XL. However, next year it will also battle the extended-length Jeep Wagoneer L.

Highlights

They say everything’s bigger in Texas, so it’s no wonder Chevrolet builds the Suburban there. If you need more maximum towing capacity than a Suburban can supply, consider a Ford Expedition. Otherwise, this full-size Chevy is an appealing SUV, especially when equipped with its efficient Duramax turbo-diesel six-cylinder engine and available air suspension.

My first word was “car.” That’s what I’m told, anyway. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with them. The design. The engineering. The performance. And the purpose. I’m a car enthusiast who loves to drive, but I’m also most interested in the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people actually buy. Anybody can tell you that a sports car is fast. What you need to know is whether or not you should buy that new SUV, and why. My life purpose is to help you make that decision.
