Popular in Europe, where city streets are narrow and parking is a challenge, the Smart ForTwo is a two-seat car with a tiny trunk. It came as a convertible and hatchback and was available with a short-range electric drivetrain or a three-cylinder gas engine hooked to a dual-clutch transmission with manual and automatic modes. Smart introduced the car for the 2008 model year. However, a lack of utility, drivetrain refinement, and a relatively high price for this size of vehicle kept the ForTwo from attracting more buyers than it did. Nevertheless, Smart redesigned the ForTwo for the 2016 model year, following it up with a more capable redesigned ForTwo Electric Drive in 2017. However, after the 2018 model year, Smart departed the U.S. market.
