Porsche based the first 2006 Cayman model on the second-generation Boxster convertible. Forward of the windshield, the two cars were essentially identical, but in place of fabric top, the Cayman had a fixed roof and a liftgate. Like the Boxster, the Cayman had a mid-engine layout, and shared its engines, transmissions, and interior with the roadster. A redesign swapped boxer-type four-cylinder engines for the flat-sixes of the first-generation car, and the model became the 718 Cayman. Six-cylinder options would later return. Today, the 718 Cayman is the most affordable Porsche sports car you can buy.
