Compared: 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2023 Jeep Wagoneer

The Chevrolet Tahoe has been a top seller among full-size SUVs for years, even as families have graduated to more efficient, less expensive, midsize three-row models such as the automaker’s own Traverse. But the Jeep Wagoneer is the first new entry in the full-size class in many years and one of the biggest competitors to the Tahoe in terms of towing, features, and price.


2023 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2023 Jeep Wagoneer: Price

The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe line covers six trim levels: LS, LT, Z71, RST, Premier, and High Country, which run between $56,000 and about $75,000 before options. Four-wheel drive is optional on all of them and commands a $3,000 premium. A Tahoe LS is relatively basic considering its price, and many consumers may choose to start off with the dressier LT, which comes with leather seats and a 10.2-inch touchscreen in place of the base 8.0-inch display.


The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer comprises four trim levels: Base, Series II, Carbide, and Series III. It starts from about $61,000 and goes up to $74,000, and four-wheel drive is also a $3,000 option across the line. The base Wagoneer, however, is equipped more like a Tahoe LT, so the price disparity may not be as significant as it seems.

It’s worth noting that the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer is not the longer Wagoneer L, which competes with the Chevy Suburban,or the Grand Wagoneer that goes head-to-head with the Cadillac Escalade, though all three are closely related.


2023 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2023 Jeep Wagoneer: Features

For those who like engine choice, the Tahoe provides several options. The base engine on LS, LT, and Z71 is a 355-hp 5.3-liter V8, but the rest of the line gets a more potent 420-hp 6.2-liter V8 as standard on the High Country trim and optional the LS and LT trims. However, all models except the Z71 are available with a 277-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder. On some models, it’s cheaper than the V8 and provides superior fuel economy.

The Wagoneer has a more limited powertrain line than the Tahoe, with a 392-hp 5.7-liter mild-hybrid V8 for the base model and a new 420-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder on other models. As with the Tahoe, RWD is standard and 4WD is optional.


Both come outfitted with automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is optional on both SUVs, but only Chevy offers its trick Super Cruise system that allows for limited hands-off driving as an option.

While space inside is similar, towing capacity is where they diverge. No Tahoe has a maximum towing capacity of more than 8,000 pounds, while the Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 pounds with the available heavy-duty towing package.

Apart from the optional 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder engine, Tahoe SUVs are motivated with V8 power. There’s no hybrid or electrification, but the V8s offer 17 mpg according to the EPA for the standard 5.3-liter model and 16 mpg for the more powerful 6.2-liter V8. The diesel does considerably better, though, rated at 22 mpg for the four-wheel-drive version and 24 mpg for rear-wheel-drive models.


The base 2023 Wagoneer’s V8 is slightly better than the Tahoe 5.7-liter with rear-wheel drive at 18 mpg, but adding four-wheel drive drops it to 17 mpg. The EPA hasn’t rated the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder.
