You might think there are already plenty of compact crossover SUVs from which to choose, but Mazda begs to differ. Starting with the 2023 model year, the automaker has two of them in its lineup: the CX-5 and the CX-50. What distinguishes the older CX-5 from the newer CX-50 is the latter model’s more modern engineering and technology, combined with a more rugged look. Familiar 2.5L four-cylinder engines live under the CX-50’s hood, including a standard 187-hp version and an available 256-hp turbocharged version. Both use a six-speed automatic transmission, and every Mazda CX-50 comes with standard all-wheel drive. As characteristic of Mazdas, the CX-50 exceeds expectations for athletic handling and features a tastefully designed cabin with high-quality materials.
