The family crossover market is hot, and if you're shopping for a utility vehicle with all-weather capability, there are two popular options you might already be aware of: the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and the 2024 Honda CR-V. Although both are family friendly and full of features, they have slightly different strengths and weaknesses.

The Equinox Is More Affordable and Offers More Standard Features

The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox starts at around $28,000 for a base model LS, the first of four trim levels. Standard equipment includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio, and Wi-Fi hot spot capability.

Next up the ladder is the roughly $31,000 Equinox LT, which adds heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, remote start, a power liftgate, and front and rear parking proximity sensors. The Equinox RS, which costs about $32,000, is the sporty model in the lineup, with an optional RS leather package and red RS badging.

At the very top end of the range is the Equinox Premier at about $33,000, adding standard leather seat trim, hands-free power liftgate, heated steering wheel, and rear-vision camera. Every Equinox comes standard in front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as a $1,600 option.

The 2024 Honda CR-V runs a touch more expensive than the Equinox at the bottom end and goes way beyond the Chevrolet in its highest trim. The CR-V lineup begins with the base model LX at just under $31,000, which offers plug-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and automatic high-beam headlights.

Upgrade to the $33,000 EX to add standard dual-zone climate control, a moonroof, heated front seats, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The $36,000 EX-L adds front and rear parking sensors, SiriusXM radio, wireless phone connectivity, leather-trimmed seats, a power front passenger seat, and a power liftgate.

The CR-V's hybrid options consist of the Sport Hybrid for about $35,000, the Sport-L Hybrid for about $38,000, and the top-of-the-line Sport Touring Hybrid, which commands about $42,000 and brings a Bose premium sound system and standard all-wheel drive. On all other CR-V trim levels, all-wheel drive is a $1,500 option.

The CR-V Is the Cargo-Space King

The CR-V and Equinox are roughly equal in passenger space, but the Honda may be the better bet for anyone who needs to haul lots of cargo. Compared with the Equinox, the CR-V offers nearly 10 more cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, and when you fold down the second row, the Honda gives you nearly 13 additional cubic feet compared with the Chevy.

The Honda Offers More Horsepower Plus Better Fuel Economy

Three of the six trim levels on the 2024 Honda CR-V offer a hybrid drivetrain: the CR-V Sport Hybrid, the Sport-L hybrid, and the Sport Touring Hybrid. With the 204-hp hybrid drivetrain, the CR-V gets an impressive 43/36/40 mpg city/highway/combined on the EPA's test cycle with front-wheel-drive, or 40/34/37 mpg when paired with all-wheel drive.

If you opt for a more affordable CR-V with a conventional 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, you'll get 190 horsepower and an estimated 28/34/30 mpg with front-wheel drive or 27/32/29 mpg with all-wheel drive.

The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox is only available with one engine, a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 175 horsepower. The Chevy gets an estimated 26/31/28 mpg in front-wheel-drive spec or 24/30/26 with all-wheel drive.
