Genesis GV80 Is Cheaper Compared With BMW X5

Rather than trim levels, BMW uses model numbers and packages to distinguish the X5 lineup. The entry-level 2024 BMW X5 sDrive40i with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine comes with rear-wheel drive for around $66,000. Adding all-wheel drive — branded as xDrive — is a $2,500 premium that's standard on the remaining X5 trims. The xDrive50e Plug-in Hybrid trim starts at around $74,000, while the performance-oriented M60i and M Competition trims with turbo V8s begin at about $91,000 and $124,000, respectively.

Unlike the variety of powertrains in the BMW SUV's lineup, the trio of Genesis GV80 trims doesn't offer any high-efficiency or performance variants. Still, they cost considerably less than the BMW. The entry-level 2024 Genesis GV80 2.5T AWD starts around $59,000 with a turbocharged four-cylinder and traction at all four wheels. The middle 3.5T trim introduces a turbo V6, starting at about $66,000. A top-spec 3.5T AWD Advanced+ crests $82,000 to start.

BMW X5 Earns Marks for Semi-Autonomous Driving

The 2024 BMW X5 comes standard with a large curved display panel encompassing a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. The 2024 Genesis GV80 includes a partially analog gauge cluster that can be optioned to a fully digital version.

This year, the X5 gains BMW's Highway Assistant Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system, which allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on certain highways. The GV80 offers a Level 2 system but doesn't allow for sustained hands-free driving. Also unique to the GV80 is an available blind-spot camera feed that pops up in the instrument cluster when the turn signal is activated.

The GV80 offers a kid-sized third row on its top-spec Advanced+ trim to bump the seating count from five to seven. While the X5 offered a third row in previous years, it lost this option for 2024.

GV80 Fuel Economy Less Impressive Than X5

With its base 300-hp turbo-four, the 2024 Genesis GV80 returns a 22-mpg estimate using the EPA's test procedures. The 375-hp turbo V6 models are rated at 20 mpg.

Despite more cylinders and equal power, the 2024 BMW X5's base 375-hp turbo-six in rear- or all-wheel drive scores a better 25 mpg estimate than the Genesis. Preliminary EPA estimates for the 483-hp plug-in hybrid X5 see a 58 MPGe rating and 39-mile electric-only driving range estimate. The 523-hp M60i and the 617-hp M Competition turbo V8 trims are thirstier at 19 and 15 mpg, respectively.
