What is the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R?
Specific to Ford's truck and SUV lineup, only the most powerful and high-performance variants receive the Raptor designation. Currently, the Bronco SUV and F-150 full-size truck offer Raptor variants, though a Ranger Raptor is coming soon. For the 2023 model year, Ford introduces "R" to the F-150 Raptor name to signify an even higher level of off-road performance and capability.

Powering Ford's biggest, baddest brute is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, the same one that turned the Mustang Shelby GT500 into a fearsome muscle car. However, Ford optimizes it for off-road duties in the F-150 Raptor R. Straight from the factory, the F-150 Raptor R provides 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque.

Beyond being quick, the F-150 Raptor R is functional. The five-link rear suspension features extra-long trailing arms for added stability on rough terrain. In addition to MyMode, there is no shortage of off-road-specific technology in the Raptor R. Ford Trail Control works like cruise control, but for the slower speeds of the trails. The Trail Turn Assist feature shrinks the Raptor R's 50-foot turning radius to account for tight off-road turns. And, as the name suggests, Trail 1-Pedal Drive offers single-pedal throttle and braking control, which is particularly helpful during rock crawling.

Among light-duty full-size trucks, the F-150 Raptor R offers best-in-class ground clearance at 13.1 inches. Its standard 37-inch tires are also a segment-exclusive. Additionally, wheel travel is 13 inches up front and 14.1 inches in the rear, allowing the Raptor R to maneuver easily over sand and rocks.

With purpose-built performance comes purpose-built design. The F-150 Raptor R has the same overall length (232.6 inches) and width (96.0 inches) as the base Raptor, but stands nearly an inch taller at 80.6 inches. The Raptor R's styling is aggressive, with a black-painted grille, bumpers, and fenders. Exclusive Code Orange-colored "R" badging appears on the grille, hood, and tailgate. And emblazoned on the rear fenders are hard-to-miss Raptor R graphics.

Black remains the color theme in the Raptor R cabin as well. The standard Recaro seats feature a mix of leather and Alcantara paired with contrast stitching throughout the interior. Additionally, the doors, dashboard, and center console feature genuine carbon fiber trim. Topping things off is Raptor R badging stitched onto the seats and center console bin cover.

The F-150 Raptor R is available only as a SuperCrew (crew cab) model. In standard form, this configuration of the Ford F-150 received a five-star overall crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick. However, due to the Raptor R's substantial modifications, the ratings may not apply to this high-performance version of the truck.

Reservations for the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R began in July 2022. Production started at the Ford Dearborn (Michigan) Truck Plant later that year. The F-150 Raptor R's starting price is around $109,000, including the $1,895 destination charge.
