“🚨 DO NOT BUY A CAR FROM HERE 🚨 We purchased a 2015 Toyota Highlander from CarMax at 125,000 miles, along with the extended warranty they strongly encouraged us to buy. Less than 9 months later, at 157,000 miles and only 7,000 miles past the warranty cutoff—the vehicle suffered catastrophic transmission failure. The car went into limp mode, will not reverse at all, and the transmission fluid is extremely dark, despite no leaks and no warning disclosures at purchase. We were told by a mechanic that this kind of transmission failure does not happen suddenly and is consistent with a long-term, pre-existing issue that develops over time. This raises serious concerns about CarMax’s so-called “rigorous inspection process.” If inspections were truly thorough, a failing transmission with severely degraded fluid should have been identified before the vehicle was sold. It is incredibly convenient that the failure occurred just outside the warranty window they sold us, allowing CarMax to deny responsibility while leaving us with a massive repair bill. This does not feel like bad luck and it feels like a vehicle with a known or developing defect that was sold without proper disclosure. For a company that markets trust, transparency, and peace of mind, this experience has been the opposite. We feel misled, taken advantage of, and stuck with what is essentially a lemon. If you are considering purchasing a higher-mileage vehicle from CarMax, be warned: once that warranty ends, you are completely on your own, even if the issue clearly existed long before. We are now exploring consumer protection options and encouraging others to think twice before trusting CarMax’s inspection claims. For reference picture of transmission fluid is attached. Save yourself the stress, financial loss, and regret. Buy elsewhere.”
