“When we purchased our Chevy Tahoe, we noticed a slight transmission slip and specifically asked customer care to inspect it before we agreed to buy the vehicle. We were clearly told everything was fine. We trusted that assurance and moved forward with the purchase — a decision we now realize was based on completely false confidence.
Fast forward just 4,000 miles later: the vehicle died in the middle of a busy intersection with my entire family in the car. Our lives were put at risk. We could have been seriously injured or killed. The transmission didn’t just “wear out” — it blew without warning, after we had already raised concerns about it before purchasing.
When I contacted the Escondido service department, the response was shockingly dismissive. I was told we were “out of warranty,” as if that somehow erases the fact that we flagged this exact issue prior to purchase and were assured it was fine. After escalating the situation, we were told to tow it in and they would “discount” the repair — not cover it, not take accountability — but offer a discount. We are somehow expected to pay for a major failure that should have been identified from the start.
This has left my family without reliable transportation, and the handling of this situation has been beyond disappointing. Our company purchases two vehicles a year from CarMax. We are repeat, loyal customers — and this is how we’re treated when a serious safety issue arises?
It’s unacceptable. We expected accountability and a full resolution, not deflection and partial responsibility for a problem that was clearly overlooked on their end.
EDIT: They responded saying this was being resolved. This was absolutely not resolved and they did absolutely nothing for me. When asked when I did not purchase the extended warranty I want to make it clear I was advised by their service department we shouldn't need to because the car "checked out". I will never be purchasing a car from Carmax ever again. The bigger you are the harder you fall. I hope your company goes out of business. No customer service. No customer should be treated like this.”

“A pleasurable experience from start to finish. Carmax gave me a very fair offer and followed through with every detail they said they would do. Everyone I dealt with was courteous and professional. I would highly recommend Carmax to anyone who wants a hassle free way ro sell their car.”

“Carolina L was really nice and helped us find a car in our budget that we loved and decided to buy! She is welcoming to all people, LGBT safe, down-to-Earth, funny, and has great customer service skills. When I originally test drove the car we wanted, I heard a weird noise with the gas pedal so I asked her about it, and never once did she make me feel like i was crazy or annoying for feeling worried...she immediately said that if I had a safety concern, she would put an order in to have a mechanic look at it right away. I was relieved over this because most sales people would have brushed me off, but not Carolina. Thank you so much for helping us find a car we love! Next time we need to buy, we will come here again. You should ask for Carolina Lopez when you come, too!”
