âI would advise everyone to not buy a car from CarMax.specially the Duarte location. They will sale you a car that does not work, get you to buy the extended care warranty then when the car keeps breaking down they will make you pay for the repairs. Stating that the extent warranty does not cover the repairs. So expect to add more money to your monthly car payments because you will be there every month. Irvin the sales associate does not care he is just interested in selling a car and making his commission. Go get a car elsewhere weâre you will get a good working car.â

We had an excellent experience at CarMax, and we would especially like to thank Jonathan Lee.
Because our English is limited, buying a car can be stressful for us. Jonathan was extremely patient, professional, and thorough throughout the entire process. He took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure we understood each step.
Thanks to Jonathanâs help, everything went smoothly and we felt very comfortable and confident with our purchase. We truly appreciate his support and highly recommend him.
CarMax is very lucky to have someone like Jonathan on the team.â

Real Experience, Real Advice â CarMax Duarte
This was my third car purchase from CarMax, but my first time at the Duarte location â and overall, it was a very positive experience.
The highlight was working with Reggie, my CarMax Consultant. Reggie was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful from start to finish. I first test-drove a car on the lot, and while I liked the model, I wanted a different trim line and color. Reggie helped me arrange a vehicle transfer from Gilbert, Arizona, and kept me updated every step of the way. When the car arrived, he even came in on his day off to make sure I was taken care of. That kind of commitment speaks volumes â Iâd absolutely recommend working with him.
A few things to know if youâre going through the transfer process: just because you pay the transfer fee doesnât mean youâre committed to buying the car â but the fee is non-refundable. And you wonât really know what youâre getting until it arrives. You can see photos and read the description, but you wonât catch every little ding or scratch, and you wonât always know if the car comes with OEM floor mats or aftermarket substitutes, or whether things like a cargo mat or privacy shade are included. In my case, they werenât â and replacing them cost hundreds of dollars. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely something to ask about up front.
One other important point: if youâre pre-approved through your bank or credit union, that wonât sync with CarMaxâs system. You still need to bring in a physical check for the full purchase amount â otherwise, you canât take the car home. Iâve financed with CarMax twice before, and despite having excellent credit (740+ FICO), I received less-than-competitive interest rates both times. I refinanced both cars later. This time, I cut to the chase and went with my credit union from the start â their rate was far better than CarMaxâs.
As for the vehicle itself â a low-mileage Acura MDX â it was in great shape overall. Smelled like new, drove like new, and Iâm very happy with it. That said, because CarMax sells every type of vehicle under the sun, their team understandably doesnât have the same in-depth brand knowledge that a dealership would. So donât expect a guided tour of the tech features or how everything works. The MDX has an unusual gear selector (push-button and toggle), no touchscreen, and uses a console pad instead. These are things I didnât fully realize until after I drove it. Again, not a criticism â just something to be aware of. If you go to a brand-specific dealer (Acura, Lexus, etc.), youâll get a more tailored delivery. At CarMax, youâll need to ask questions and do a little homework yourself.
Also worth noting: when you sell your car to CarMax, if thereâs a lien, it may take up to two weeks for them to pay it off. I wasnât expecting that â and it resulted in me making two car payments in the same month. I wouldâve appreciated clearer communication on that front.
Still, despite those minor hiccups, I had a great experience at CarMax Duarte. The staff was professional, the process was straightforward, and Iâm thrilled with my new car. CarMax has a business model that clearly works â itâs no-pressure, transparent, and much less exhausting than traditional dealerships. Just go in informed. Ask questions. Understand their processes. And if youâre lucky, work with someone like Reggie â he made the entire experience smoother, and I really appreciated his dedication.â

âI recently purchased a used 2024 Lexus ES 300h and sold my truck to CarMax in the same visit, and I have to say â this was hands-down the best car buying experience Iâve ever had. Eric was incredible from start to finish. Not only was he helpful and knowledgeable, but he also made the entire process feel relaxed and personal. We had great conversation throughout, and he genuinely made me feel like family.
Everything was smooth, transparent, and easy â no pressure, no hassle. Eric truly went above and beyond, and because of him, Iâll be recommending CarMax to friends and family without hesitation. Make sure Eric gets the credit he deserves â he made this experience unforgettable. Five stars all the way!â
