Review QuickTakes:

Some vehicles need no introduction, and that’s true of the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. A midsize SUV offered in two-door and four-door body styles, the Wrangler is a rugged off-roader with a removable top, removable doors, and a fold-down windshield. So if helping you become one with nature is high on your list of requirements in your next vehicle, a 2022 Wrangler delivers. It even comes with an available plug-in hybrid powertrain so that you can tread even more lightly.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Configurations

In addition to its two available body styles, the 2022 Wrangler comes in ten different trim levels. Highlights of each include:

  • Wrangler Sport — For a raw Jeeping experience as close as you can get to the original Willys-Overland and CJ models of the 1940s and 1950s, the Wrangler Sport is your ride. Luxuries like cloth seats, carpeting, and floor mats are standard, but most things are manually operated. That includes the transmission, the transfer case, the windows, the door locks, the headlights, and the side mirrors. The Sport four-door does have standard (manually operated) air conditioning, though, along with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring
  • Wrangler Sport S — Choose Sport S trim, and Jeep swaps out the black 17-inch steel wheels for silver 17-inch alloy ones. The Sport S also has dark-tinted rear windows, power heated side mirrors, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a security alarm. The two-door model also gets air conditioning
  • Wrangler Sport Altitude — Altitude specification adds black 18-inch alloy wheels to the Sport S four-door, plus black exterior and interior detailing, a black three-piece hardtop with an interior headliner, a roof panel storage bag, a rear window defroster, and a rear window wiper
  • Wrangler Willys Sport — The Willys Sport builds on the base Sport with black 17-inch alloy wheels in an exclusive design wrapped in light-truck off-road tires. This trim level also has gloss black bumper trim, a black grille, rock-protection side sill rails, blacked-out exterior badges, unique graphics, dark-tinted rear windows, and all-weather floor mats
  • Wrangler Willys — Take the Willys Sport, add Sport S features, and top it all off with LED headlights and fog lights
  • Wrangler Sahara — The Sahara builds on the Wrangler Sport S with 18-inch alloy wheels with a polished finish, unique grille and bumper trim, body-color fender flares, side assist steps, and a passive entry system. Inside, the Sahara adds fancier detailing, upgraded instrumentation, ambient interior lighting, and automatic climate control with a powerful new air filtration system. An 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard, accompanied by a navigation system, satellite radio, connected services including a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a premium sound system
  • Wrangler Sahara Altitude — Take a Sahara, add the blacked-out Altitude details defined above for the Sport Altitude, and you’ve got a Sahara Altitude. Additionally, this model has all-terrain tires, leather seats, a leather-wrapped gearshift knob, and a body-color three-piece hardtop
  • Wrangler High Altitude — The upscale High Altitude builds on the Sahara Altitude with 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED fog lights, LED taillights, body-color bumpers and door handles, and turn signal indicators on the outside mirror caps. Inside, caramel-colored accents and stitching are standard, and this version of the Wrangler includes blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and rear parking sensors. It also has Jeep’s off-road cruise control system (Selec-Speed) and an automatic transmission
  • Wrangler Rubicon — The Rubicon is made for serious off-roading. It has Sahara features, but with specific appearance, mechanical, and hardware changes to best serve its mission. Highlights include 17-inch machined-finish wheels, light-truck off-road tires, a vented hood design, fender flares with extra clearance, and rock-protection side sill rails. Premium cloth covers the seats. Rubicons also have wider front and rear locking axles, a 4.10 rear-axle ratio, a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive system, and an Off-Road Plus mode
  • Wrangler Rubicon 392 — This performance-oriented version of the Wrangler comes with a 6.4L V8 engine, an automatic transmission, steering wheel paddle shifters, a Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system, Selec-Speed off-road cruise control, performance brakes, and 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels. The Rubicon 392 also features remote engine starting, steel bumpers, LED exterior lighting with automatic high-beam headlights, a hood with a functional air scoop, body-color fender flares, a body-color three-piece hardtop, and bronze exterior accents. Inside, ambient interior lighting, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are standard. This version of the Wrangler also comes with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and rear parking sensors

Jeep offers the Wrangler two-door in Sport, Sport S, Willys Sport, Willys, and Rubicon trim levels. The Wrangler four-door is available in all ten. If you want the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid with its 21 miles of electric-only driving range, it comes in Sahara, High Altitude, and Rubicon trims with blue accents and graphics as well as specific instrumentation and functionality related to its unique drivetrain.

What’s New for the 2022 Jeep Wrangler?

This year, Jeep adds more off-roading capability to the 2022 Wrangler. The four-door Willys, Rubicon, and Rubicon 392 models are available with a new Xtreme Recon package that adds unique suspension tuning with a 1.5-inch lift, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, 35-inch all-terrain tires, and a 4.56 axle ratio. Separately, Rubicon models are available with a 4.88 axle ratio delivering a 100:1 crawl ratio.

Jeep also makes either a 7-inch or an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system standard in nearly every version of the 2022 Wrangler. The automaker also claims the air filter for the automatic climate control system now removes up to 95 percent of all particulates. Other changes include cosmetic updates to wheels, colors, and 4xe details.

Jeep Wrangler Competitors for 2022

The Jeep Wrangler’s primary competitor is the Ford Bronco. Offering an open-air driving experience similar to the Jeep thanks to its removable roof and doors, the Bronco is equally talented when driving off-road and digs deep into its historical legacy when it comes to design. To a lesser extent, the Wrangler also counts the Toyota 4Runner as a competitor. The 4Runner is capable when the pavement turns to dirt, mud, and rock, but it does not offer a removable roof and doors. Some people might view that as a feature and not a bug.

My first word was “car.” That’s what I’m told, anyway. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with them. The design. The engineering. The performance. And the purpose. I’m a car enthusiast who loves to drive, but I’m also most interested in the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people actually buy. Anybody can tell you that a sports car is fast. What you need to know is whether or not you should buy that new SUV, and why. My life purpose is to help you make that decision.
