Understanding Tesla's Bioweapon Defense Mode
The electric vehicle maker's advanced air filtration system promises maximum protection in a world full of dirty air.

Some modern automobiles have sophisticated high-efficiency particulate air filtration systems, or HEPA filters, to help drivers avoid the ill effects of smog, wildfire smoke, or other airborne pollutants. Tesla's Bioweapon Defense Mode in-car air filtration system goes further and promises to protect its occupants from far worse air-quality threats.
An Efficient HEPA Filter With a Slightly Ominous Name
Though the system's name is undoubtedly on brand with Tesla founder Elon Musk's penchant for hyperbole, Tesla's Bioweapon Defense Mode combines a HEPA filter with a unique, pressurized cabin technology and a slightly ominous name.
Cleaner air can be a blessing for people suffering from allergies or those dealing with problems such as dangerous air-quality issues during forest fire season. Compared with less efficient filter types, HEPA filters can stop 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 micrometers in diameter, according to the United States Department of Energy.
Tesla claims its Bioweapon Defense Mode advanced air filtration system can also filter fine particles, gasses, viruses, and pollen to a level virtually undetectable to the vehicle's passengers. The system can also be helpful in cities where air pollution levels have reached all-time highs or even during a biological weapons event.

How Effective Is Tesla's Air Filtration System?
Tesla says it tested the effectiveness of its Bioweapon Defense Mode by placing a Tesla Model X in a giant plastic bubble pumped with highly contaminated air 83 times more polluted than air considered "good" in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's air-quality index. Within two minutes, the system could clean the in-cabin air to the point where pollutants were almost undetectable. The system also cleaned the air outside the vehicle by 40%.

A Standard Feature on Tesla Models S, X, and Y
Beginning in 2016, the HEPA filter and Bioweapon Defense Mode were part of the Premium Upgrades Package offered in the Tesla Model S sedan and the Model X SUV models with the revised front fascia design. The system became a standard offering on Model S and X by mid-2018 and on the smaller Tesla Model Y SUV in 2020. The advanced air filter system is, however, too large to fit in Tesla Model 3 sedans.
To add Bioweapon Defense Mode to an older Model X or Model S made between 2016 and 2021, a $425 retrofit package is available from Tesla, which includes the HEPA filter and onscreen changes to indicate the system has been upgraded.
