Compared: 2024 Subaru Crosstrek vs. 2023 Honda HR-V
These two recently redesigned SUVs face off.
Subaru | Honda
Where the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek emphasizes its capability through a tall stance, the 2023 Honda HR-V goes for a decidedly more city-friendly, low-slung look. These two crossover SUVs have similar proportions, though, and they're priced about the same.
The Crosstrek and HR-V Go Head to Head in Price
The Crosstrek is the entry point to Subaru's crossover range. The redesigned 2024 model starts at just under $27,000. With all-wheel drive (AWD), the 2023 HR-V pretty much matches that price, starting at just above $27,000. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) base model, however, cuts that figure to around $25,000. The Crosstrek can't match that, as each trim comes with standard AWD. Both can crest $30,000 with options.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Beats 2023 Honda HR-V in Features
Under the hood, both base models are powered by 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, with the HR-V putting out 158 horsepower, while the Subaru Crosstrek's horizontally opposed boxer engine puts out 152 horsepower.
The Crosstrek's Sport and Limited trims get a bigger engine, a 2.5-liter powerplant with 182 horsepower. All HR-V and Crosstrek models use continuously variable automatic transmissions, as Subaru dropped the manual transmission option for the Crosstrek with this new version.
Neither is currently available with a hybrid powertrain.
The Crosstrek is more suited to off-road adventures than the Honda. While the Subaru offers marginally less storage space for camping gear — 54.7 cubic-feet, versus the HR-V's 55.1 cu-ft — it boasts greater ground clearance — 8.7 inches in the Subaru against Honda's 7.0 inches — and added capability to tow small trailers. The Crosstrek can tow up to 3,500 pounds, perfect for kayaks or a lightweight camper. Meanwhile, according to Honda, the HR-V is not designed to tow a trailer.
When it comes to cabin tech, Subaru offers its large 11.7-inch center infotainment screen as an option in the 2024 Crosstrek. A pair of 7.0-inch screens come on the base model. This is a win over the Honda, whose largest available center console screen measures only 9.0 inches diagonally.

The 2023 Honda HR-V Falls Behind in Fuel Economy
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek delivers an EPA-estimated 27/34/29 mpg city/highway/combined with the 2.0-liter engine and 26/33/29 mpg with the 2.5-liter engine.
Despite its FWD drivetrain (usually more fuel-efficient than AWD), the base 2023 HR-V fairs slightly worse than the Subaru in fuel economy tests, achieving an EPA-estimated 26/32/28 mpg. AWD notches those figures down to 25/30/27 mpg.
All vehicle pricing includes MSRP plus destination charges (set at the time of publication), and will be rounded to the nearest thousand.
