Who Makes Genesis Cars?
To differentiate its high-end models from the more affordable vehicles in its lineup, Hyundai announced in 2015 that it would market its luxury-leaning Genesis and Equus sedans under new names and a new standalone brand: Genesis. For the 2017 model year, the Hyundai Genesis would become the Genesis G80, and the slightly larger Equus, the G90.

Since then, Genesis—while sharing engines and platforms with Kia—has grown into its own, introducing a sports sedan called the G70, as well as a line of SUVs. These vehicles compete with BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes-Benzes in terms of luxury, design, and performance, but cost a fair amount less—something on which Genesis prides itself. The brand plans to transition to a fully electric lineup by 2030, as well, and has introduced a couple of EVs globally within the past year.

What Kinds of Cars and SUVs Does Genesis Make?
Genesis builds elegant cars that deliver strong performance and sumptuous, quiet interiors. Currently, the U.S. lineup consists of three sedans (the G70, G80, and G90) and three SUVs (the GV60, GV70, and GV80). The entry-level G70 starts at $40,970 and takes on the BMW 3 Series. The G80 is a 5 Series competitor in size, but its $49,345 base price comes in close to six grand less than the Bimmer’s. The G90 sits atop the sedan lineup and demands at least $76,620. As for the SUVs, the smallest one of the lot is also the most expensive, as the $59,985 GV60 is electric. Those interested in more traditional powertrains may wish to check out the GV70 compact crossover or the midsize GV80, which cost $42,595 and $51,295, respectively.

Are Genesis Cars and SUVs Good?
Genesis vehicles have received numerous accolades. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named every model in the 2022 lineup a Top Safety Pick+, which is its highest rating. J.D. Power also thinks highly of the brand, with the 2021 G80 earning the company’s quality and dependability awards for the midsize premium class. Further, several Genesis models have appeared as finalists for the North American Car of the Year, and the G70 sedan grabbed the title in 2019.

The automotive press has praised Genesis for its affordable pricing and well-designed interiors made of high-quality materials that coddle passengers in comfort and often outshine those of Lexus and Acura. The brand has also received good reviews for its responsive powertrains that deliver a sporty driving experience while preserving the smooth, calm ride expected of a luxury vehicle.

I write about cars. A lot. That's because I’ve always loved cars and the fact that they regularly hand me the keys to shiny new automobiles so I can write about them is a constant source of amazement. I cover breaking news, write reviews, and attend auto shows and new vehicle launches across the country. The more winding the road and the more unknown the route, the better.
