Compared: 2022 Chevrolet Equinox vs. 2022 Nissan Rogue
These family-friendly crossovers are popular people movers, but one offers superior mileage and overall cargo room.
Nissan | Chevrolet
Price-conscious families seeking a sporty crossover have lots to explore in the stylish 2022 Chevrolet Equinox and the updated 2022 Nissan Rogue, with both offering a surprising array of features.
Chevrolet
The Starting Price Is Comparable for Equinox and Rogue
The Equinox, powered by a standard 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo producing 170 horsepower, starts around $27,000, with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive as an available option. Four trim levels are available, including a new, tougher-looking RS edition and the top-of-the-line Premier.
Nissan
Nissan's third-generation Rogue is more expensive, with a base price of about $29,000, but it offers more power from its 201-hp 1.5-liter turbo engine and has more cargo room. The Rogue is offered in four trim levels: S, SV, SL, and Platinum. A smaller Rogue Sport model is also available, starting at around $26,000, with a 141-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Rogue Wins the Fuel Economy Contest With Equinox
Despite having equally matched engine displacement, the Chevy's mileage is very different from the Nissan's, even with turbocharged power. The Equinox generates an EPA estimated average of 28 mpg for its front-wheel-drive model, and 27 mpg for its all-wheel-drive version.
Nissan
The Rogue's 1.5-liter mated with a continuously variable transmission produces a considerably better 33 mpg with front-wheel drive (32 mpg in the SL and Platinum trims), while its all-wheel-drive version is good for 31 mpg in all trims. Its smaller cousin, the Rogue Sport, is good for 27 mpg, while the all-wheel-drive Equinox can reach 26 mpg. Both feature a six-speed automatic transmission.

Rogue and Equinox Feature Interior Amenities Aplenty
While both vehicles are 183.0 inches long, the way the carmakers have configured and equipped the two crossovers makes all the difference between them. The Equinox got a front and rear facelift in 2022, giving it a bit of a Camaro-inspired look, and the optional 19-inch wheels and blacked-out features of the RS edition considerably transformed its personality. Standard amenities include LED headlamps, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and package of road-safety electronics, including automatic high-beam assist and a following distance indicator.
A 7.0-inch touchscreen is standard, and a larger 8.0-inch screen is available; both are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Parking assist and adaptive cruise control are also available. While there's room for five, the Chevy's layout can provide 63.9 cubic feet of storage with the second-row seats folded.
Nissan
That's 10 cubic feet fewer than the Rogue, with its 74.1 cubic feet of gear-hauling room. Rogue also ups the game with an available 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, similar to that in the new Nissan Z and Pathfinder. It offers wireless smartphone charging and Apple CarPlay compatibility with its available 9.0-inch touchscreen. Android Auto requires a wire. You can include a proprietary Nissan navigation system, instantly access Google Maps, or use your smartphone's mapping.
The Rogue can be equipped with a head-up display and a unique, multi-camera, 360-degree parking assistant. As with the Equinox, a driving safety package is included with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot alert and more.
In the cabin, the Rogue offers three-zone climate control, plus rear passenger window sunshades, and a multilevel cargo area divider for that extra storage space. A hands-free liftgate is also an option.
All vehicle pricing includes MSRP plus destination charges (set at the time of publication) and will be rounded to the nearest thousand.
