2024 Toyota Tacoma: What We Know So Far
Optional hybrid power, more trim levels, and angular styling bring the Tacoma up to speed.

2023 is turning out to be the year of the midsize pickup. In the last six months, Chevrolet, GMC, and Ford have all unveiled redesigned trucks in this segment, and now Toyota has revealed a refreshed 2024 Tacoma that will hit the market late this year.
Between its edgy styling, expanded range of trim levels, various suspension options, and new powertrains (including a hybrid), the truck aims to appeal to a broader audience than before.

The Tacoma range can be divided into three categories. The base SR, next-step-up SR5, and luxury-oriented Limited trims make up the mainstream models. These aim to please buyers who plan to keep their truck on solid (paved) ground.

The four-door Double Cab returns with your choice of a 5- or 6-foot box. The extended Access Cab, however, is no more. In its place is the so-called XtraCab, a two-door, two-seat configuration that mates exclusively with the long bed and trades the second row for a lockable storage compartment.
Models with Toyota Racing Development cred (i.e., those with TRD in the name) cater more to enthusiasts looking for a capable companion to take off the beaten path. This includes the distinctively styled TRD Sport, the Bilstein-shock-equipped TRD Off-Road, the next-level TRD Pro, and the TRD PreRunner, which returns to the lineup for the first time since 2015.

Then there's the new overlanding-oriented Tacoma Trailhunter, which features a host of equipment geared toward backcountry travel. Its lifted Old Man Emu suspension is robust enough to support an optional ARB bed rack topped with a tent or other overlanding accessories. An LED light bar in the grille helps illuminate the way forward after dark, and there's even a 2,400-watt AC inverter for powering your camping gear, pre-wired auxiliary toggle switches for controlling your aftermarket accessories, and an onboard air compressor so you can re-inflate your aired-down tires with ease.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Power and Capability
Beneath its sculpted hood, the base Tacoma swaps last year's 159-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine for a turbocharged 2.4-liter. It makes 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque in the SR, but 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque in other models.
The last-gen Tacoma's optional 278-hp V6 is gone, replaced by a hybrid powertrain. It pairs the four-cylinder with a 48-hp electric motor fed by a 1.87-kWh battery, upping the ante to 326 ponies and 465 lb-ft of torque. You can find it as an option for mid-level models and as standard equipment on top trims.

Most Tacomas will undoubtedly hit dealer lots with an eight-speed automatic transmission, though a six-speed manual with rev-matching and anti-stall tech is available on certain trims with the gas-only engine. That said, choosing the manual brings output down to 270 horses and 310 lb-ft.
While lower-level models feature leaf springs in back, other Tacomas sport a new multilink coil-supported rear end. This suspension design promises to improve handling and make for a smoother ride.
Anyone looking to do some serious off-roading should focus on the TRD range — particularly the TRD Pro. It boasts an extra-wide stance, 33-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires, three-way-adjustable Fox shocks, and rear bump stops for impact absorption. Moreover, the driver and the quickest person to shout "Shotgun!" will surely appreciate the TRD Pro's race-style bucket seats, complete with air-over-oil shock absorbers to help cushion front riders. An optional push-button front-stabilizer-bar disconnect improves wheel articulation on this model too.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Comfort and Tech
Except for the Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter, which receive a 14.0-inch infotainment display, the Tacoma comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen in the center stack. Buyers can get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster by choosing a mid-level model or better; otherwise, they'll look down at a 7.0-inch screen in the binnacle.
Every model boasts wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus at least three USB-C ports. Several variants offer a premium JBL audio system that includes a removable dash-mounted, water-resistant speaker, which the driver can use outside the truck for up to six hours.

Heated and ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate, a head-up display, adaptive dampers, and auto-deployed side boards grace the Tacoma Limited.
All models come with Toyota's Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assistance tech, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and automatic high-beams. Blind-spot monitoring and a surround-view camera fall on the options list.

Toyota hasn't confirmed pricing for the 2024 Tacoma yet, but has said that non-hybrid models of the midsize truck will go on sale later in 2023. Tacomas with the powerful hybrid powertrain are expected to arrive on sale in early 2024.
