2024 Toyota Grand Highlander: What We Know So Far

Yes, Toyota's new SUV is a longer Highlander, but there's more breadth here, too.

Wedging into Toyota’s SUV lineup between its practical Highlander and its rugged Sequoia, the new Grand Highlander packs blocky styling, an upsized third row, a large 12.3-inch touchscreen, and a choice between 362 hp or as much as an estimated 34 mpg combined.

The Grand Highlander made its debut at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show before hitting the market for the 2024 model year.

Looking more like a RAV4 that took advantage of its gym membership than a stretched Highlander, the new Grand Highlander wears a nearly vertical front end with a wide lower grille and narrow headlights.

Inside, a big 12.3-inch touchscreen sprouts from the dash, while a wireless charging pad sits below. Toyota's latest infotainment software is on board, and it includes over-the-air updates plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Some versions will have copper-hue interior accents, too.

A full host of crash-avoidance and driver-assistance tech including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control comes standard.

As of February 2023, Toyota hasn’t released dimensions, though the automaker has provided a few hints. An estimated 98 cu.ft. of maximum cargo space with rows two and three folded means the Grand Highlander offers about 14 cu.ft. more luggage room than the standard Highlander or around 11 cu.ft. more than the Honda Pilot. Behind the third row, the Grand Highlander has about 21 cu.ft. of space, which is about 30% more than the regular Highlander.

Grand Highlander Power and Capability

Toyota will offer three engine choices for the Grand Highlander, though exact power specifications have yet to be released. The lineup starts with a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder that, in the standard Highlander, delivers 265 hp.

A 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid will likely be the mileage champ, though. Toyota says it is targeting 34 mpg combined based on its own estimates. In the standard Highlander, this setup is rated at 186 hp.

The top-end choice is a hybrid powertrain with 362 hp, which Toyota says will enable the Grand Highlander to sprint to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and lug up to 5,000 lbs. of trailer (though not at the same time). Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional, except with the more powerful hybrid, which features standard AWD.

2024 Grand Highlander Pricing

Toyota says pricing for the 2024 Grand Highlander will be announced during the summer of 2023. It’s safe to guess it will cost more than the standard Highlander, which begins at about $38,000.

XLE, Limited, and Platinum trim levels will be offered. Base XLE models include power-adjustable and heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, a choice between second-row captain’s chairs or a three-seat bench, third-row seating, and a power tailgate. The Limited tosses in leather trim, cooled front seats, JBL speakers, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and rain-sensing wipers.

Topping the lineup, the Platinum spoils second-row occupants with heated and cooled seats, plus it adds a panoramic glass sunroof and a digital rearview mirror.
