Honda's first electric SUV debuts with sporty looks and 300 miles of range.

Honda has built a reputation on making fuel-sipping gas and hybrid models, but electric vehicles (EVs) have been largely absent from its lineup. That changes with the debut of the 2024 Honda Prologue. Recognized as the company's first electric SUV, a more significant distinction may be that the Prologue will be available nationwide. The last all-electric vehicle Honda sold in the United States — the Clarity EV — was only available in California and Oregon.
Co-developed with General Motors, the 2024 Prologue is Honda's first entry into the crossover EV segment, where it will compete with models such as the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Nissan Ariya, and Tesla Model Y. Honda says the all-new Prologue marks the beginning of the company's transition to a "zero-emissions future" by 2040.

2024 Honda Prologue Trim Levels and Place in the Lineup
Honda will offer the 2024 Prologue SUV in three trims, all easily recognized by anyone who has shopped for a Honda model in recent years. Serving as the model's entry point, the Prologue EX comes with standard heated front seats, cloth upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Next, the Prologue Touring adds front and rear parking sensors, a hands-free power liftgate, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and leather seating. Sitting atop the lineup is the Honda Prologue Elite, with its 21-inch alloy wheels, heated and ventilated front seats wrapped in perforated leather, head-up display, and driver-selectable sport mode.

According to Honda, the 2024 Prologue rides on a 121.8-inch wheelbase and is 192 inches long, 78.3 inches wide, and 64.7 inches high. The front track width is 66.1 inches, while the rear is a smidge wider at 66.3 inches. To put that into perspective, the Prologue is about seven inches longer and five inches wider than the 2024 Honda CR-V, though the latter is taller by roughly two inches. In fact, in terms of length, width, and track width, the Prologue is more similar to the Honda Passport crossover SUV.

2024 Honda Prologue Interior and Cargo Space
Despite its larger exterior dimensions, the 2024 Honda Prologue matches the CR-V with its five-passenger seating capacity. Honda says the Prologue offers up to 136.9 cubic-feet of interior space. Other highlights of the Prologue's cabin are a standard power-adjustable driver's seat, a wireless phone charger, an 11-inch digital gauge cluster, and an 11.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display. In addition, the 2024 Prologue features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity and is the first Honda SUV equipped with Google Built-In technology.

Depending on the configuration, the Prologue EV offers 25.2 cu-ft of cargo space, though you can expand that up to 57.7 cu-ft by folding the rear 60/40 split rear seat. In comparison, a Honda CR-V offers substantially more cargo room. Thanks to the transmission shift lever located on the steering column instead of between the seats, Honda developed a two-level front center console with what it claims to be class-leading storage capacity.

2024 Honda Prologue Powertrain
EX and Touring versions of the 2024 Honda Prologue EV are equipped with standard front-wheel drive (FWD) using a single permanent magnet motor, an 85-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and direct drive in place of a traditional transmission. All-wheel drive (AWD) adds a second motor to power the rear wheels. It is optional on the EX and Touring and standard on the Prologue Elite.
Honda has not announced specifications for the FWD configuration but claims the dual-motor AWD system produces 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque.

2024 Honda Prologue Range and Charging Time
If you've driven an EV outside of well-populated areas, you know range anxiety is a real concern. Thankfully, with 300 miles of Honda-estimated range, the 2024 Prologue likely won't have you worrying about reaching the next charging station. However, remember that Honda is spotlighting the Prologue's FWD maximum range, so expect AWD range to be less.
Honda
The 2024 Honda Prologue is DC fast-charging capable at rates up to 155 kW, which effectively translates to 65 miles of range for every 10 minutes of charging.
Honda is partnering with other automakers to develop a U.S. charging network with 1,350 charging stations in operation by 2030. And, specific to the 2024 Prologue, the company is making three charging packages available at the time of purchase, each with incentives tailored to how the owners plan to recharge — at home or at public charging stations.

2024 Honda Prologue Safety Features
All versions of the 2024 Prologue include the Honda Sensing collection of safety systems, including forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, and more. In addition, the Prologue adds new rear cross-traffic braking, an active blind-spot monitoring system with steering assist, and rear pedestrian alert features.

2024 Honda Prologue Pricing and Availability
Honda has not released detailed pricing but says the 2024 Prologue will start in the upper $40,000s. Currently, it's unclear if Honda's new EV SUV will be eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit. To qualify for the total amount, a new EV must meet specific battery requirements.
If you're interested in purchasing a Prologue of your own, you won't have to wait long. Honda will start accepting orders for its all-new EV in late 2023 and expects the first models to arrive on dealer lots in early 2024.

Everyone needs a few things to be passionate about in life. For me, cars are near the top of the list. I’m constantly searching the classifieds for that bargain-priced, one-owner Datsun 240Z barn find. I’m always up for seemingly endless conversations about the cars we wish our parents had kept, the benefits of EVs versus the lure of a thumping V8, or which reliable crossover SUV best suits your family and your dogs. Needless to say, I feel fortunate to spend my work hours analyzing vehicle data, test-driving the latest all-new or updated models, and sharing the knowledge and insights I’ve gained with readers.
