The 2023 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) kicked off April 5, bringing with it a barrage of new truck, SUV, and electric models. Here's a rundown of the highlights in alphabetical order.
Genesis
Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept
Potentially signaling an impending foray into the popular luxury SUV-coupe segment, Genesis unveiled the GV80 Coupe concept during the 2023 NYIAS. The GV80 Coupe is based on the company's GV80 luxury SUV but swaps out the traditional SUV shape in favor of a sloping roof (complete with a carbon-fiber panel) that culminates in a tailgate featuring a pronounced ducktail spoiler and wraparound taillights.
The interior of the concept boasts four individual bucket seats with carbon-fiber shells and a rear strut brace. Powertrain specs were not announced.
Jeep
2024 Jeep Wrangler
Jeep used the backdrop of this year's New York auto show to unveil an updated version of its popular Wrangler SUV. Cosmetic changes for the 2024 Wrangler include a revised grille design, a windshield-integrated radio antenna, and 10 new wheel designs. Inside, there's a revamped instrument panel that now houses a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Newly standard safety equipment for 2024 includes first- and second-row side-curtain airbags.
The updated 2024 Wrangler Rubicon gains a Dana 44 HD full-float rear axle that helps boost its towing capacity, a transfer case with a 100:1 crawl ratio, and the option of a Warn winch. Jeep also announced a new Rubicon X model that ups the ante with standard 35-inch tires, steel bumpers, and an integrated off-road camera.
Jeep is also expanding its Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid range for 2024 with a new Sport S 4xe model. Jeep notes the Sport S 4xe will lower the base price of the Wrangler plug-in when it goes on sale later this year.
Kia
2024 Kia EV9
Kia's latest electric vehicle, known as the EV9, made its public debut at this year's New York show. Roughly the same size and shape as the company's popular Telluride family SUV, the plug-in EV9 offers seating for up to seven with a maximum electric range of about 300 miles per the manufacturer's estimates.
EV9 highlights include fast-charging capabilities, available all-wheel drive (AWD), optional swiveling second-row captain's chairs, and Level 3 semi-autonomous driving technology, which allows some hands-off-the-wheel and eyes-off-the-road driving.
Ram
2025 Ram 1500 REV
Ram jumped into the burgeoning electric pickup truck segment with its new 1500 REV. Set to go on sale next year as a 2025 model, Ram says the 1500 REV will deliver up to 500 miles of range when equipped with an optional 229-kWh battery pack. The standard 168-kWh battery will deliver about 350 miles of range. Both configurations offer fast charging that can add up to 110 miles of range after 10 minutes of charging.
Initially, the 1500 REV will be sold with a dual-motor AWD setup with a performance target of 654 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque. Those figures should net a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.4 seconds and towing and payload capacities of 14,000 and 2,700 pounds, respectively.
Subaru
2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness
Subaru traveled to the New York show to expand its off-road-oriented Wilderness line of vehicles with the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness. Based on the Crosstrek compact crossover, the Wilderness package adds several rugged improvements, including standard off-road driving modes, 9.3 inches of ground clearance, and protective body cladding.
Crosstrek Wilderness models are motivated by a 2.5-liter flat-four developing 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. AWD and a continuously variable transmission with an integrated cooler are standard, netting an improved towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness goes on sale this fall with a starting price of about $33,000.
Volkswagen
2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition
Volkswagen toughened up its three-row Atlas SUV at the N.Y. auto show with a new Peak Edition trim level. Essentially an appearance package, the Peak Edition features a revised grille, added body cladding, silver lower-body trim, black window trim, and package-specific badging. Although mechanically similar to the standard Atlas (including a 269-hp turbo-four and an eight-speed automatic transmission), the Peak Edition does add standard 4Motion AWD and unique 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tire
