Jessi Malay shares DIY tips for how to make the most of your child’s closet space

Capital One wants to help you “Elevate the Everyday” so you can do more of what you enjoy doing—even when you’re spending more time at home. We’re bringing you personal hacks, tips and tricks for all the things you love doing—all brought to you by professional tastemakers and trendsetters.

For Capital One’s Elevate the Everyday series, Jessi Malay breaks down storage basics by demonstrating how she built a beautiful new organization system for her daughter’s closet, “because Capital One helps you do more of what you love, and what I love is DIY home renovations.”

After getting her start in the music industry back in 2006, Malay has demonstrated a dizzying range of talents, from directing and producing to working with fashion and design. On top of that, she and her husband have their hands full keeping up with their 1-year-old daughter, Alessandra.

Malay says, “The key to making closets look elevated are the details.” She shares every detail to help you make your closet a keeper, because even if DIY home renovations aren’t your thing, a cleaner closet will help you save time on your morning routine.

How to Take Control of Your Closet:

If your closet feels chaotic, it might be time to get it together. Malay recommends these simple tips for making the project more manageable.

  • Start With Something Solid: There are tons of easy-to-build storage systems, so there’s no need to start completely from scratch. Do some research and pick one that works for your space and your clothing.

  • Get Better Baskets, Bins and Boxes: The secret to storage is knowing which things go where. Start by giving every piece of clothing a proper place. Then, invest in a few sets of baskets or bins for your bulky items so everything stays where it belongs.

  • Sweat the Details: When you’re working with small spaces, every inch matters. Spend some time on the accents that’ll make your closet pop, such as color-coordinating your bins and upgrading the cabinet handles.

  • Upgrade Your Hangers: Nothing ties a closet together like consistency. Pick a hanger type and stick to it. Malay recommends the curved velvet variety to avoid stretching or pulling your clothes.
