Lost credit card?

Find peace of mind with these tips.

Deep breath. Don't panic. When it comes to a lost credit card or a credit card that's been stolen, the path to protection and peace of mind can start with these 4 simple tips on what to do and how to report your missing card. Of course, you should always follow whatever directions your credit card company requires.

1. Retrace your steps

Think for a second. Where's the last place you remember using your card? Shopping online? Swiping at the grocery store? The gas station? Now's the time to check those couch cushions and call the restaurant you went to last night. But if it's all a dead end, let's move on. Fast.

2. Report the loss or theft right away

Once you suspect you're dealing with a lost credit card, or think it might have been stolen, call your credit card company as soon as possible to report it. Capital One and most credit card issuers offer $0 liability for unauthorized charges, which means if your card is lost or stolen, you will not be responsible for charges you did not authorize.

Find your credit card company's toll-free number—most have 24/7 service for emergencies like this. They'll want to know the last place you remember using the card—if you remember. The sooner you report the loss or theft, the sooner you can get a new card.

3. Keep an eye on your card statements

As always, you should check your monthly statement closely, whether you're doing it online, on an app, or with a paper statement. Look for purchases you didn't make, and contact the credit card company as soon as possible if you see any.

4. Update your autopayments

If you've used the lost credit card to set up automatic or recurring payments to companies for things like your cable bill, make sure you give them your new account information once you receive it from the credit card company.

A stolen or lost credit card doesn't have to be a disaster. Knowing what to do—and how to report the situation—can minimize the hassle and put you where you belong. Back in control.

If you're a Capital One customer, and your credit card is lost or stolen, report it right away by signing in to your account.
