2021 Honda Civic Review: Despite Advancing Age, Civic Remains a Top Contender

A redesigned Honda Civic is coming for the 2022 model year, but the outgoing 2021 version is still worthy of consideration.

The Civic Touring is a delight to drive. Reliably composed and demonstrating unflappable balance and predictability when pushed to its limits, the Civic Touring handles beautifully while offering a compliant ride.

The Honda Civic has been a staple of American roads since it debuted in the early 1970s, and often appears at or near the top of the sales charts for its class. According to Honda’s data, measured by retail sales, the Civic has remained its class leader for more than a decade. Honda also claims the Civic is the most sought after ride for Millennials, Generation Z, first-time new car buyers, and multicultural buyers.

To call the Civic an important product for Honda would be a serious understatement: It’s a crown jewel.

The 2021 Honda Civic is a compact car, available in 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback body styles. Honda has cancelled the 2-door coupe after the 2020 model year. This review specifically covers the sedan, which comes in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Touring trim. The sport-tuned Civic Si version is on hiatus until the redesigned 2022 Civic arrives.

This year, Honda makes no changes to the Civic lineup as it prepares for a redesigned model to arrive by summer of 2021. Prices range from the low $20,000s to the high $20,000s,* not including destination charges.

For this review, Honda supplied a Cosmic Blue, 2021 Civic Touring sedan (the color requires an upcharge). The window sticker came to $28,495, plus a $995 destination charge.

*Prices indicate base MSRP for individual trim levels. Honda also sells the performance-oriented Civic Type R, which stands above the rest of the Civic lineup with a starting price in the upper mid-$30,000s.
