Received in August 2015 my 2016 BMW Convertible

12/25/2023

Usually don’t write reviews but I still loveeeee my BMW so here is my real life experience… This car is amazing with excellent performance and handling. ONLY big COMPLAINT / ADVICE IS: DO NOT GET THE RUN FLAT TIRES - I live in NJ and has gone through 9 stock Pirelli P7 tires and 2 rims during my first 2 yrs of ownership. This was due to the tire sidewall that rips open (not repairable must replace) when I hit a pot hole and/or the rim would crack. I drove around constantly trying to avoid the smallest of potholes which was causing a negative driving experience, some anxiety and annoyance. After much frustration & research 2 years passed - I finally switched to non-run flat tires and I have AAA as a backup (no spear tires in these cars) which resolved this issue and haven’t had ANY blowouts for the last 6years. As the single owner as of date of this posting I’ve owned my 2016 BMW 228xi convertible M-Sport package for 8yrs and 4 months which currently has 113,500 miles. My initial plan when I built and had this car shipped from Germany, in summer 2015, was to get a new BMW after 7 years but this car still runs, handles and performs so well I decided to keep it even longer. IM thinking at this point until I have compounding problems but so far it’s been highly maintained and in excellent condition so I’m keeping. As a 6ft2in 220lb man, I’ve fit very comfortably in the cockpit but it’s a squeeze if adult friends were to sit directly behind me. A smaller person under 5ft6 will be ok. I frequently drive my car with 4 occupants. Definitely best $60k (out the door) I’ve spent on my fully loaded 2 series. Living where it gets cold the automatic climate control inside works excellent as low as 50degrees with the top down, rear wind deflector & windows up it can be very stable up in the cockpit and easy to maintain 73 degrees. At the same time it would be nice if I had remote starter but I was told not possible for an aftermarket install (Car does have remote climate control though the BMW app but this does not start the engine to actually warm up the car)- due to the 40+ computers in bmws. Also I recommend not to have the top down below 50degrees as it can potentially be problematic. Finally, it would be nice if cup holders were bigger sized to hold 40oz thermos/bottles and not just regular sized water/soda bottles. But these minor wishes does not diminish my enjoyment and total love and appreciation for such a fun to drive car. Also as a supersport bike rider (& the freedom most bikers experience) I can confidently state this is as close to similar fun to experience this drive with the top down riding on the open highway or winding back roads in my convertible! The cornering is as good as it gets in this car! The biggest expense I had was to replace the navigation screen which became partly distorted around the perimeter of the display, this happened even with normal use and excellent up-keep (looked like a bunch of little internal bubbles from the heat/weather) and changes in temperature (best guess) inside the convertible. The dealership stated in plain language that the plastic on the screen was separating and I was outside the warranty period so they could not cover the cost to replace even tho this was no fault of my own. BMW did help to fully cover the cost of labor & install but I had to spend $2500 to purchase an OEM replacement navigation /screen after 6yrs of use. Still - Def Best vehicle I’ve owned in my adult of life!

Great Car

02/28/2023

I have had a Porsche 928, several Corvettes from the mid 1970s to 1980 and they all had their pros and cons. My BMW 2281X is THE BEST I have driven in snow and ice. Handles well, will get out of snow and and handle very well on ice. This is with Blizzac snows on. On dry pavement, the acceleration is outstanding! Interior comfort is very Good. Controls are easily read. Sound system is excellent. A sun roof would be nice, mine does not have one. Gas milage, of course, is not as good as the manufacture wants you to believe, one of those great lies all car manufacturers tell you, but it is reasonable for the power and handling the car gives you. I give a big Thumbs UP for this car.
