What's New for the 2025 Toyota Highlander
For 2025, Toyota gives gas-only Highlander XSE and Platinum trim levels, as well as every version of the Highlander Hybrid, standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The Highlander, a three-row crossover SUV, is available with gas-only and hybrid powertrains. It can seat as many as eight people, but its third row may be too cramped for some passengers. A Limited 25th Edition Hybrid is also available for 2025, in recognition of the Highlander's 25th year on the market.

2025 Toyota Highlander Trim Levels
The 2025 Toyota Highlander is available with two powertrain options. A turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder (gas-only) making 265 horsepower is standard, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. There's also an available 243-hp hybrid powertrain that comes with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The turbocharged Highlanders are available in LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum trim levels. The Highlander Hybrid comes in XLE, XLE Nightshade, Limited, Limited 25th Edition, and Platinum trim levels. The Highlander has front-wheel drive (FWD), with AWD as an available upgrade (standard with XSE and Platinum). All Highlander Hybrids have standard AWD.
- LE (gas only)
The Highlander LE comes with 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, a power liftgate, eight-person seating, fabric upholstery, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, three-zone automatic climate control, a 7.0-inch driver display, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone-mirroring capability.
- XLE (gas and hybrid)
The XLE gets second-row captain's chairs and seats seven, though an eight-seat configuration is available. There's also SofTex leatherette upholstery, a power liftgate with hands-free operation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, and second-row sunshades.
- XLE Nightshade (hybrid only)
This appearance package adds a black grille, badges, and roof rails, plus other black exterior trim pieces to the XLE Hybrid trim. It also adds black synthetic leather to the front and second-row seats.
- XSE (gas only)
The XSE has AWD, black-painted 20-inch wheels, and a sport-tuned suspension. Also included are a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and ambient lighting.
- Limited (gas and hybrid)
Limited models receive leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and parking sensors. An eight-seat configuration is available on non-hybrid models, and a surround-view camera system is available with both powertrains.
- Limited 25th Edition (hybrid only)
This special edition gets 25th anniversary badging and trim, trim-specific gray paint, and heated and ventilated front seats. It also has heated outside mirrors and, like the regular Limited, a surround-view camera.
- Platinum (gas and hybrid)
The Highlander Platinum adds rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive headlights, a panoramic glass roof, a digital rearview mirror, a head-up display, and heated second-row seats.

2025 Toyota Highlander Cargo Capacity and Towing
With all its seats in place, Toyota's 2025 Highlander offers 16 cubic-feet of storage space while its maximum cargo capacity totals 84.3 cu-ft. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds in the non-hybrid models and 3,500 pounds in the hybrid versions.

The EPA-estimated fuel economy for the most efficient gas-only 2025 Toyota Highlander is 25 mpg in combined city and highway driving with FWD. With AWD, the SUV averages 24 mpg combined. The 2025 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is substantially more efficient, as evidenced by an EPA estimate of 35 mpg combined.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid five out of five stars for an overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Highlander sufficiently high marks in most assessments. However, the vehicle got a second-worst "Marginal" score in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test.
Standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additional features found in upper trim levels include a surround-view camera system and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
