2024 Porsche Macan First Look: Porsche's Compact SUV Goes All-Electric

Porsche is transforming its popular Macan compact SUV into a pure electric vehicle for the 2024 model year. In addition to its plug-in powertrain, the new Macan also ushers in fresh styling and new tech that includes up to three dashboard-mounted screens.

2024 Macan Offers Two Trims, Up to 630 Horsepower

At launch, the 2024 Macan will be available in two trims — the entry Macan 4 and the step-up Macan Turbo. Both models come standard with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, along with four-corner air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management electronic damping.

The Macan 4 produces up to 402 horsepower using an overboost function, while torque checks in at 479 pound-feet. Porsche says the Macan 4 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and can carry on to a top speed of 136 mph.

The Macan Turbo, meanwhile, is good for 630 horsepower and 833 lb-ft of torque. Those figures allow the Macan Turbo to sprint from zero to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 161 mph. For even more performance, Macan Turbo buyers can option their SUVs with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, an electronically controlled rear differential lock.

Macan 4 and Turbo buyers will also have the option of a rear-axle steering system. Porsche says the system improves high-speed stability while simultaneously making the Macan more maneuverable at lower speeds. Porsche claims Macan models equipped with rear-axle steering will boast a turning circle of just 36.4 feet, which is an improvement over the 39.2 feet required by the current model.

2024 Porsche Macan Gets Coupe-Like Styling, More Interior Room

The 2024 Macan arrives with revised styling but still draws a familial resemblance to the gas-powered model currently sitting in dealer showrooms. The new electric Macan does, however, have a more rakish rear end, giving it a coupelike look in profile.

Despite its sloping roofline, the 2024 Macan is actually more spacious than the model it replaces thanks to a wider track and a wheelbase that has grown by 3.4 inches — the latter of which contributes to increased rear-seat legroom.

Space behind the rear seats has grown from 17.2 cubic-feet to a maximum of 18.0 cu-ft. Including the SUV's new front trunk area made possible by the switch to electric power, Porsche says the 2024 Macan's overall storage space is up by 4.4 cu-ft compared with today's model.

2024 Porsche Macan Boasts New Tech Inside and Out

The plug-in Macan is based on Porsche's latest Premium Platform Electric (PPE) vehicle chassis, which features an 800-volt electrical architecture. The Macan represents Porsche's first use of the PPE underpinnings.

The Macan's battery, regardless of trim, is a 100-kWh lithium-ion unit that's capable of DC fast charging at speeds up to 270 kW. When hooked to a fast charger, Porsche says the Macan can replenish its battery from a 10% to 80% charge in as little as 21 minutes.

The Macan also features a high-voltage switch that effectively splits the battery pack into two separate units when linked to a 400-volt charger, which Porsche says allows for more efficient charging without the need for an additional high-voltage booster. Regenerative braking in the Macan EV allows up to 240 kW of power to be recuperated while driving. Total range has not been announced for either Macan model as of February 2024.

Inside the Macan EV you'll find standard tech that includes a 12.6-inch curved instrument display and a 10.9-inch central display. For those craving even more pixels, the Macan can be optioned with an additional 10.9-inch infotainment screen that sits on the dash ahead of the front-seat passenger.

The 2024 Macan uses a new Android Automotive OS-based infotainment system that's also compatible with Apple CarPlay. Riding the popularity of voice assistants such as Amazon's Alexa, the Macan EV's infotainment system features Porsche Communication Management as standard, which allows users to control certain vehicle functions, including navigation, by saying the prompt, "Hey, Porsche." Third-party applications will be available through the new Porsche App Center.

Marking a Macan first, the 2024 EV model is available with a head-up display featuring augmented reality. The system projects virtual elements such as navigation arrows into the driver's line of sight. Porsche says the projected images appear in the real world at a distance of about 33 feet and correspond to the size of an 87-inch display.

2024 Macan to Go On Sale in Second Half of 2024

The 2024 Porsche Macan, set to be built in Leipzig, Germany, is currently available for order, with the first deliveries scheduled to begin during the second half of 2024.

The Macan 4 carries a base price of about $80,000, while the range-topping Macan Turbo lists from roughly $107,000. Both prices include a $1,650 delivery fee.
