What's New for the 2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD

For 2026, GMC's versatile MultiPro Tailgate comes standard on the midrange SLT trim, while a couple of paint colors get swapped for new hues. White Frost Tricoat and Thunderstorm Gray are replaced by Glacier White Tricoat and Coastal Dune. Additionally, Amazon Alexa integration has been discontinued.

The 2026 Sierra 2500 HD is available with a dizzying choice of body styles, trim levels, engines, and options to meet almost any need. Like many of its rivals, this heavy-duty truck's configurations range from a basic work truck to an all-terrain conqueror to the premium luxury Denali Ultimate trim level at the top of the lineup.

Pros

2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Trim Levels

The 2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is a heavy-duty truck available in regular cab, extended cab (Double Cab), or crew cab styles with seating for up to six people. Regular-cab models come exclusively with a long cargo bed (8.1 feet), while other versions get a standard short bed (6.8 feet) with the long bed available as an option.

For most models, the base engine is a 6.6-liter V8 that produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. As an option, a 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 increases output to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque is available. The base-level trim is rear-wheel drive (RWD) with four-wheel drive (4WD) available as an option. On most higher-level trims, 4WD is standard.

Depending on the body style, seven trim levels are available. They include Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

  • Pro

This is your basic work truck with 17-inch steel wheels, a hitch receiver, and an integrated trailer brake controller. On the inside, you get manual windows and locks, vinyl upholstery and flooring, a 40/20/40-split front bench seat, and air conditioning. Tech features include a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and OnStar remote-vehicle services with a WiFi hot spot.

  • SLE

Stepping up to the SLE adds alloy wheels, power-adjustable mirrors, power locks and windows, and cruise control. Carpeting and cloth upholstery decorate the cabin, while the dashboard includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Google built-in apps and voice controls.

  • SLT

This midrange trim level upgrades to 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, chrome trim, power-folding and extending mirrors, and remote engine start. Inside, the SLT features dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable heated front seats, leather upholstery, a tilting and telescoping heated steering wheel, and a trailer-management app.

  • AT4

This entry-level off-road model comes with 20-inch wheels, an off-road suspension, underbody skid plates, a MultiPro tailgate, and a spray-in bedliner. The interior features ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, and a wireless charging pad. This version of the Sierra 2500 HD also adds adaptive cruise control.

  • AT4X

For more serious all-terrain adventures, this trim steps up with a 1.5-inch suspension lift kit with adaptive dampers, strengthened skid plates, and a driver-selectable locking rear differential. It also features tire-pressure monitoring for trailers, a sliding rear window, premium leather seats, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system with tailgate output. Tech upgrades include a digital rearview mirror, and a head-up display.

  • Denali

The Denali builds on the AT4 and swaps the off-roading hardware for a lot more luxury. The highlights include body-colored and chrome exterior trim, running board side steps, a power sliding window, and upgraded interior trim and upholstery.

  • Denali Ultimate

This top trim only comes with the turbo-diesel engine and finishes off the features list with power-deploying side steps, a power sunroof, premium leather upholstery, a 12-speaker Bose system, a head-up display, and a digital rearview mirror.

2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Payload and Towing

For the ultimate in hauling, select crew-cab models with the short bed are rated at a maximum payload capacity of 4,005 pounds with the gas engine. For towing with a gooseneck fifth-wheel hitch, the regular-cab RWD model with the diesel engine and Max Trailering package can pull up to 22,390 pounds.

The configurable MultiPro tailgate improves access and hauling abilities. It can be lowered to provide a step that makes it easier to get into the cargo bed or to serve as a bed extender. For towing, the Hitch Guidance camera feature makes lining up a trailer much easier, while built-in apps allow you to configure settings for different trailers and add additional cameras.

2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Fuel Economy

Heavy-duty trucks are exempt from reporting EPA fuel-economy estimates. In our 2024 Sierra AT4X review, one of our auto experts observed 12.9 mpg from the turbo-diesel V8 while towing a race car on a trailer.

2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Safety Ratings and Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted crash tests on the Sierra 2500 HD.

Every 2026 Sierra 2500 HD comes with the Sierra HD Pro Safety suite of advanced driver-assistance features. It includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, a following-distance indicator, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additionally, a Teen Driver mode allows parents to monitor use of the truck by their children.

Other features — such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, 360-degree camera, safety-alert seat, and a blind-spot monitor for trailers — are available on many trim levels.
