Buying a new car can be out of reach for many people. However, buying someone’s used vehicle can come with risks. For those who want a used car and peace of mind certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles can offer an appealing balance of value and risk. Each manufacturer has its criteria for CPO vehicles; here’s how Buick plays the game.
What makes a Buick Certified Pre-Owned?
For a Buick to be eligible for the CPO program, it must be six years old or newer (based on the date when it was first sold) and display fewer than 75,000 miles on its odometer. It must also have a clean title and a vehicle history report free of major concerns.
Every Buick CPO vehicle goes through a 172-point inspection that includes topping off fluids and inspection of the engine, transmission, suspension components, brakes, and drivetrain. Buick technicians will perform any servicing that is required. Further, technicians will execute any outstanding safety recalls before the dealer offers the car for sale as CPO.
The Buick CPO warranty
When you purchase a certified pre-owned Buick (like a 2021 Envision), you get a six-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, good from the original in-service date. If you’re buying a car that is five years old, you only have one year left on that warranty. Buick also includes a one-year/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty.
Note that this warranty does not cover tire damage, damage due to improper maintenance, or vehicle misuse.
Other Buick CPO perks
Buick includes a scheduled maintenance program for CPO buyers, but visits must occur within two years or 24,000 from the date of CPO sale. Services include oil and filter changes, tire rotation, and multi-point inspection. The CPO program provides roadside assistance and courtesy transportation for the duration of the six-year/100,000-mile warranty. Buyers receive a free vehicle history report and can return their CPO Buick within three days or 150 miles if they are not completely satisfied.
Finally, buyers will get a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM, assuming the car is so equipped. Buick CPO vehicles also get one month of OnStar services, including advanced diagnostics, automatic crash response, and turn-by-turn navigation. Drivers can also unlock the doors and start the car remotely from a smartphone. If owners select a paid plan after 15 days of activation, they’ll get an additional two months for free.
