A massive range improvement, revised sensor package, and styling updates keep Volvo's biggest U.S. seller fresh for next year.

Volvo's current-generation XC60 has been on the market since the 2018 model year, a very long time for any vehicle, never mind one in the ultra-competitive midsize luxury SUV category. But a clean design and refined interior helped the Volvo XC60 become the automaker's top seller in the United States market. For 2028, that same basic SUV shape lives on, with key upgrades and improvements that should keep it relevant for a few more years.

For 2028, Volvo will continue with two powertrain options for the XC60. On the low end, there's the B5 AWD, which makes 247 horsepower and is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. On the high end, Volvo offers the 455-hp T8 AWD, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) also powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor to deliver the extra power. That two-model lineup hasn't changed for 2028. Instead, the PHEV's range is where things get different.

For 2028, the XC60 PHEV is now called the Long-Range Plug-in Hybrid. Where the outgoing plug-in model managed 35 miles on a charge, Volvo says to expect 78 miles from the 2028 model. That increase is thanks to a new and larger 41.2-gross-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack.

The extra range is significant, but it does come with a few penalties. First is weight, with the new XC60 PHEV tipping the scales at 4,855 pounds. That's up from the prior model's 4,649 pounds. The other is charging time. The XC60 still charges at Level 2 speeds. That means it now takes about 5.7 hours to recharge the battery, up from five hours in the current, shorter-range version.

Though it's still largely the same shape as before, the 2028 XC60 bears a very different nose. Volvo drastically simplified the front bumper and headlights, creating a cleaner look. The hood and fenders have been revised as well, resulting in an appearance that's quite a bit fresher.

Other visual changes to the 2028 Volvo XC60 include bigger 20-inch wheels as standard equipment, with 21-inch wheels an option that adds a bit more curb appeal. There's also a new color called Heather Bronze (shown in the photos), a sort of metallic tan with just a hint of pink. It looked excellent under the studio lights, and should be even better on a sunny day. New taillights and a restyled tailgate round out the 2028 XC60's exterior changes.

You'll also find a few interior tweaks. Volvo has added a new option to the mix: a ventilated leather upholstery in a light tan called Cardamom (shown above) that pairs perfectly with the new Heather Bronze exterior color. The other interior tweaks are subtle, but with the studio lights dimmed, I could tell that an updated ambient lighting system provided a more consistent and noticeable glow throughout the cabin.

There's a bit more room in the second row, too. Despite the bigger battery, I noticed the transmission tunnel intrudes a little less into the footwell than before, making it a bit more comfortable back there. The XC60 still seats five people, though, and the cargo area still provides 21.1 cubic-feet of space behind the second row.

Volvo recently updated the XC60's infotainment system, adding a 11.2-inch portrait-oriented display. That carries over to the 2028 model, with the software including Google's Gemini AI assistant. I wasn't able to sample the feature yet, but in other Gemini-equipped Volvos, I've found it good at not only fielding complex requests for restaurant suggestions but also detailed route requests to find twisty roads or avoid congestion hot spots.

The new XC60 includes a revised sensor suite that improves how the SUV sees the world around it, a combination of radar, camera, and ultrasonic sensors. These enable improved 360-degree surround-view imaging and a new lane-change-assist feature. There's also the promise of future improvements to come via over-the-air updates.
