The latest interior and exterior photos of Toyota's redesigned and newly electric three-row Highlander SUV, with info on battery, power, and size.

The 2027 Toyota Highlander marks the start of this SUV's next generation, and the big news is that it will be available exclusively as an electric vehicle. The previous-generation Highlander is offered with a traditional gasoline-powered engine or as a hybrid. 

While such a huge change might be surprising, remember that Toyota also sells the Grand Highlander three-row SUV. Having two similarly sized three-row crossovers means the automaker may be taking less of a chance by turning its Highlander all electric.

The new Highlander will be available in XLE and Limited trim levels. The XLE will offer a choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), with different driving ranges, batteries, and horsepower depending on which you choose. The Limited trim, on the other hand, can only be had with all-wheel drive and the larger battery option.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the new 2027 Highlander is 198.8 inches, falling in between the current Highlander and the Grand Highlander in overall length. It is exactly as wide as the Grand Highlander at 78.3 inches, but its height is shorter than both. The new Highlander's wheelbase of 120.1 inches, however, is longer than both.

Second-row captain's chairs are standard on both the XLE and Limited. With them, the Highlander seats six people. A three-person bench is available on the XLE, pictured above, which increases capacity to seven people. I tested them in person and found that they easily slid forward and provided a decent gap for third-row access.

Toyota did not reveal third-row dimensions, but I found the area to be far more spacious and comfortable than what I've experienced in the current Highlander. When the second row was moved forward by perhaps 2 inches, I was able to comfortably fit in the back despite being 6-foot-3. In fact, I found I could fit comfortably back-to-back-to-back in all three rows on the passenger side. This, in my experience, is quite good for a three-row SUV.

The Highlander specs indicate that the SUV has 45.6 cubic-feet of cargo space with the third row lowered. The current Highlander has 48.4 cu-ft, while the Grand Highlander has far more at 57.9 cu-ft. Toyota says the new Highlander EV has 15.9 cu-ft (versus 16 cu-ft in the current Highlander and 20.6 in the Grand Highlander) behind the third row, but from what I could see, that figure may not include the sizable under-floor storage well.

With FWD, the 2027 Highlander makes 221 horsepower and 198 pound-feet of torque. That doesn't seem like a lot of power for a three-row family SUV in my opinion, especially because the current Highlander Hybrid has 243 horsepower and likely weighs less than the all-electric next generation (though Toyota did not announce the new vehicle's curb weight). The AWD 2027 Highlander produces 338 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque.

2027 Toyota Highlander Electric Driving Range and Charging

The XLE comes standard with a 77-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack. With FWD, Toyota estimates the vehicle will travel up to 287 miles on a charge. That figure falls to 270 miles with AWD. A 95.8-kWh battery is optional in the XLE AWD and standard in the Limited; Toyota gave a 320-mile range estimate for both trim levels.

The new Highlander has a Tesla-style North American Charging Standard (NACS) port and Toyota says it will be possible to go from 10% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes, although it was unclear which battery that refers to. Battery preconditioning is also standard, which helps bring the battery to an ideal temperature prior to using DC fast charging.

The 2027 Highlander will be equipped with Toyota's latest-generation touchscreen tech interface. It now features a home screen plus 5G network connectivity, in addition to improved voice commands. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is standard, and the available native navigation system can be displayed on the digital instrument panel. 

A pair of wireless device charging pads is standard, and they feature a synthetic suede material that apparently prevents slipping. From my experience in the vehicle, I think this material looks and feels better than the typical plastic and rubber pads I've seen. Vehicle controls and an electronic shifter sit between them on a center console that has a large bin underneath and large cupholders. Toyota says there are 18 cupholders total throughout the interior.

2027 Toyota Highlander On-Sale Date and Factory Location

Toyota expects the 2027 Highlander to go on sale in late 2026. It will be built at a factory in Georgetown, Kentucky, while the batteries are sourced from Toyota's new battery plant in Liberty, North Carolina. Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle's on-sale date.
