Nissan's compact crossover SUV is all new, with an innovative hybrid drivetrain that's likely to make waves in its segment.

Nissan's bestselling vehicle in the United States, the Rogue, has been completely redesigned. Arguably more handsome inside and out, the all-new Nissan Rogue arrives for 2027 with hybrid power, standard all-wheel drive (AWD), one-pedal driving, a new Smooth Stop feature that blew my mind in a brief test drive, and a superior driving feel over its hot-selling compact crossover SUV rival, the Toyota RAV4.

For 2027, the Nissan Rogue enters its fourth generation with an all-new exterior and interior. The biggest news lies under its fresh steel skin with the return of a hybrid powertrain (the kind without a plug) after an eight-year absence. Unlike the 2017 to 2019 Nissan Rogue Hybrid, this new hybrid Rogue drives much more like a fully electric vehicle, delivering a surprisingly satisfying experience that vaporized my tempered expectations.

The Nissan Rogue Hybrid from the previous decade was a parallel hybrid, meaning the gas engine and electric motor worked together to drive the wheels. The new electrified Rogue is a series hybrid. In other words, only its front and rear electric motors power the wheels. There is no transmission, so its 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, with 148 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque, is purely a generator with no mechanical connection to the wheels. With the electric motors, engine, and 1.67-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery flexing their hardest, total system output comes in at 225 horsepower.

Nissan's preliminary fuel-economy estimates are currently limited to the mid-grade Rogue Hybrid SR, at 38 mpg in combined city and highway driving. That's about average for AWD compact crossover SUVs, with the RAV4 representing a more efficient alternative with up to 42 mpg combined with AWD.

I briefly test-drove the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid in Park City, Utah, at a Nissan-sponsored press event that also allowed me to drive it back-to-back with a 2026 Toyota RAV4 Limited. Though there's a full review forthcoming, my brief 3.5-mile mountain neighborhood loop offered illuminating takeaways.
During my stint in the Rogue, the new Smooth Stop feature induced riotous laughter that I quickly had to control, as I had a Nissan engineer riding along. Smooth Stop eases braking pressure during the final few feet of slowing to a stop, so you don't have to do it yourself to mitigate head-toss. I didn't expect it to make such a huge difference, but it did, which surprised the heck out of me, thus my almost uncontrollable laughter.
Smooth Stop is one of those little assists that I imagine could significantly reduce driver fatigue in stop-and-go commutes, and I see it as a game changer that should spread across the industry.
Also, with electric motors powering the Rogue Hybrid's wheels, instant torque at all four corners boosts the SUV's agility. It drives just like an EV, except there's the muted but reassuring thrum of three cylinders ensuring the electricity keeps flowing. I left the Rogue Hybrid wanting more seat time; specifically, canyon-carving seat time on Angeles Crest Highway because this SUV seems like it would be a riot on one of my favorite back roads.
The 2026 RAV4 Limited acquitted itself just fine on the same brief drive loop. It's a perfectly decent SUV with plenty of practical selling points. It's even eager to tackle turns and has nice weight to its steering, but driving the Rogue Hybrid immediately after made the Toyota feel a touch agricultural.

Behind the wheel of the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid SR with the SR Technology Package, you get a welcome upscale touch. My photographed example's quilted, perforated TailorFit leatherette in Gray (it looks white) appears worthy of an Infiniti's cabin, and I appreciate the interior's abundant comfort. Available features such as ventilated front seats and 64-color ambient lighting contribute to the premium vibe.

It thrills me to report on and wax poetic about the abundance of physical controls inside the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid, unlike some models that rely too heavily on touchscreens to control basic functions. The physical climate controls, in particular, are logically presented on their own panel near the base of the center stack, but that panel looks cheap and bulky, and it appears out of place despite its ideal placement. It's where my eyes landed when I first saw the Rogue Hybrid's interior, and given its front-and-center prominence, it weakens an otherwise upscale interior design, in my opinion.

According to Nissan, the 2027 Rogue Hybrid's front headroom and legroom beat the RAV4's. Sitting in both back to back, I discerned no appreciable difference in occupant space. These Nissan and Toyota compact SUVs offer abundant room for four adults. I like how the Rogue's rear doors open almost 90 degrees, which I hear is great for loading the baby seats. Also, I like wide-swinging doors for stowing larger items in a pinch. They also allow me to photograph the rear seats more evenly.

The 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, plus a 15-watt Qi2 magnetic wireless charger. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster also comes standard. Available with higher trims is a 14.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in (Maps, Gemini), as well as 14.3-inch digital gauges. The range-topping Platinum gets fancy, with exclusive features such as dual wireless phone chargers, a head-up display, and a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system — four more speakers than the standard six.

Nissan's ProPilot Assist (adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance) comes standard with the 2027 Rogue Hybrid. Standard ProPilot rounds out the Rogue's solid suite of standard advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Available ADAS includes automatic lane-change and hands-free low-speed semiautonomous driving.
