A Mercedes-Benz emblem comes with certain expectations: a luxurious cabin, strong performance, and attention to detail, for a few. Having spent time in the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE580, I can confidently say those expectations are spot on for this midsize luxury SUV. From its clean exterior design to its elegant cabin and powerful engine, the GLE580 is what you would expect of a Mercedes-Benz.

Despite being last redesigned in 2020, the 2026 GLE-Class still stands out in the crowded luxury SUV market, in my opinion. Not only does it offer accouterments such as massaging seats, a high-end audio system, and quality materials throughout, but its advanced, seamless technology improves the overall experience.

Though it may be one of the most powerful variants in the GLE lineup, the GLE580 feels like more of a grand tourer, leaving the sporty driving characteristics to the performance-oriented AMG versions. That's not to say the GLE580 isn't quick, but its serene driving experience and smooth, quiet ride are where this Mercedes-Benz SUV shines.

About the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE580 Review Vehicle

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV is available in six trim levels: GLE350, GLE450, GLE450e, GLE580, AMG GLE53, and AMG GLE63 S. All come standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive except the GLE350, which can be equipped with rear-wheel drive or 4Matic. Base prices range from about $64,000 to around $133,000, including the destination charge to ship the SUV to a dealership from its assembly plant in Vance, Alabama.

For this review, Mercedes-Benz provided me with a 2026 GLE580 for testing near Detroit. Optional equipment was extensive, highlighted by Manufaktur Signature Cote d'Azur Light Blue metallic paint, the Manufaktur Signature Interior Package, Pinnacle Trim, the Driver Assistance Package, and 22-inch AMG Twin 5-Spoke wheels. The manufacturer's suggested retail price was $122,910, including the $1,250 destination charge.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Exudes Elegance Inside and Out

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE features a classic SUV shape, albeit with bold fenders and integrated dual exhaust outlets that give it a powerful look. A large Mercedes-Benz star logo sits in the center of the easily recognizable grille, and on closer inspection, the grille itself features an array of tiny star logos. Sleek LED headlights, signature running lights, and large air intakes create a strong presence, finished nicely with the optional 22-inch AMG wheels.

When I first climbed into the GLE580, the high quality of materials throughout the cabin was apparent. While the GLE does come standard with a lavish interior, my test vehicle featured the Manufaktur Signature Interior Package, which adds Yacht Blue nappa leather and Black Piano Lacquer trim throughout the interior. There are even pillows on the front-seat headrests and cupholders that are both heated and cooled.

Access to most features is via the 12.3-inch touchscreen display; climate functions, however, are kept separate for quick and easy access. A volume knob and shortcut buttons to media, navigation, and vehicle settings are in the center console, surrounding a touchpad that operates as an alternative infotainment interface. For further redundancy, the soft-touch controls on the right side of the steering wheel can also operate the center display.

With their soft leather trim, the front seats of the Mercedes-Benz GLE580 not only look stylish, but offer good support and multiple power adjustments, including a power-extending seat bottom. The seats are heated and cooled, and numerous massage functions can help reduce fatigue on longer trips.

While the rear seats aren't quite as plush as those up front, they still offer good support. The impressive legroom and headroom provide plenty of space to stretch out, and even the middle seat isn't a bad place to sit. Mercedes-Benz also offers a third-row option in the GLE, but my test vehicle was not equipped with it.

While the GLE feels like a full-on luxury car, it still offers proper utility. The wide rear hatch opens to 33.3 cubic-feet of cargo space, more than enough for multiple suitcases. Fold the second row flat, and the space expands to 74.9 cu-ft.

The GLE's Intuitive Technology Helps Make Life Easier and Safer

The 2026 GLE employs the Mercedes-Benz MBUX infotainment system, featuring a straightforward interface for easy navigation. Large, swipeable screen icons provide access to a range of features, including media and navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity comes standard with a wireless connection. With similar graphics and backgrounds, the matching 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and infotainment screen form a cohesive display.

While there are multiple ways of interacting with MBUX, the voice assistant quickly became my preferred method. Activated by saying "Hey, Mercedes," the system uses AI and can learn, making it one of the better natural-voice assistants available. Just by asking, I activated the seat massager, set the temperature to 70 degrees, changed the ambient lighting, put on my favorite SiriusXM satellite radio station, and got directions to the closest coffee shop, all without looking away from the road.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE580 is available with an extensive list of advanced driver-assistance systems, but surprisingly, most of the typical ADAS features are not standard. While you need to upgrade to the optional Driver Assistance Package to get features such as adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist, the GLE does come standard with Pre-Safe. This system automatically adjusts the front seats and seat belts seconds before an imminent impact. It will even broadcast pink noise to protect your ears before the loud crash.

Equipped with the optional Driver Assistance Package, my test vehicle featured adaptive cruise control with lane centering, providing steering input to keep the Mercedes in the center of the lane. It's important to note that this is not a hands-free system, and a warning will tell you to put your hands back on the wheel after a few seconds.

While testing the system on I-94 near Ann Arbor, Michigan, I found that the lane centering was not as smooth as I would have liked. The SUV moved back and forth in the lane, and even the slightest curve needed more steering input than some competitive products. That said, the adaptive cruise operated well, and even when a car cut into my lane, the GLE slowed quickly but smoothly, staying a safe distance from the vehicle without jarring braking action. The system also features an automatic lane-change function activated with the turn signal.

While there is no rating yet for 2026 at the time of publishing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE its highest rating, Top Safety Pick+, specifically for models equipped with the Driver Assistance package.

The Mercedes GLE580 Boasts Big V8 Power

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE580 has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a mild-hybrid electric assist that delivers 510 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is 4Matic all-wheel drive that can send 100% of the torque to the front or rear wheels for improved traction in poor driving conditions.

While its V8 engine delivers plenty of power, fuel efficiency is not its forte. According to the EPA, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE580 gets an estimated 18 mpg in combined city and highway driving. During my time behind the wheel, the trip computer indicated a slightly better 18.2 mpg.

With that powerful V8 under the hood, the GLE580 moves quickly off the line. Mercedes said 60 mph comes up in just 4.3 seconds, and my experience gives me no reason to dispute this figure. But quick launches and high-performance driving don't fit with this luxury SUV's overall character.

In most driving situations, the GLE starts in second gear for a smooth start, and while there's never a lack of horsepower, it's not what I would call a sporty SUV. The GLE580 handled my favorite back roads without issue, but the soft suspension and noticeable heft discouraged me from pushing the SUV too hard. If you prefer enthusiastic driving over cruising, the similarly priced AMG GLE53 has slightly less power but stepped-up handling and braking performance.

If you're driving through town or cruising down the highway, though, the GLE580 is a mighty fine ride. Virtually no road or wind noise permeates the cabin, and the air suspension nicely hides any rough patches in the road. With its elegant cabin, high-end audio system, and comfortable seating all around, this SUV makes a great road-trip car.

Is the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class a Good SUV?

If you're in the market for a midsize crossover SUV and want all the trappings of driving a Mercedes-Benz, the 2026 GLE580 may be the ideal choice. The luxury midsize SUV market is fiercely competitive, with quality options such as the Audi Q8, BMW X5, and Porsche Cayenne. But the Mercedes-Benz GLE580's spacious, opulent cabin; advanced technology; serene ride; and powerful V8 make it hard to beat.
