2026 Ford Mustang FX: What's Old Is New Again

Car companies are always looking for ways to keep their products fresh and maintain buyer interest. Common tactics include updated styling, a revised interior, powertrain enhancements, and the introduction of new technology. Automakers might also look to their history for inspiration, putting a modern twist on a previous design.

Ford is doing just that with the 2026 Mustang FX package, an homage to the third-generation Fox-body Mustang produced from 1979 to 1993. That vehicle was one of the first to ride on Ford's Fox platform, which was developed in the 1970s to give the company a versatile chassis that could accommodate a variety of powertrains and car types.

Essentially an appearance package, the new Mustang FX incorporates several '80s-era Mustang design cues to evoke a retro look and feel. For even more old-school design, buyers can opt for the FX Performance package.

Available on Mustang GT Premium coupes and convertibles, the new Mustang FX packages are expected to be open for order placement later this month.

2026 Ford Mustang FX: Retro Mustang Styling Inside and Out

Buyers can choose from one of two new 19-inch wheel designs, both finished in Oxford White with color-matched center caps. The standard Mustang FX wheels feature a split five-spoke design similar to the current Mustang, while the Performance package wheels have a more vintage, Fox-body-inspired look. Both wheel designs feature the Mustang GT wordmark in a new font stamped on the center.

Continuing the white color theme, the Mustang FX features 5.0-liter, GT, and Mustang pony badges in Oxford White, while Performance package models come with white "nostrils" in a gloss-black grille. The standard Mustang FX gets Dark Carbonized Gray nostrils.

At the other end of the car, white taillights are standard. According to Ford, the taillights and FX Performance package wheels will be available for order on other Mustangs through the Ford Performance Parts catalog.

The automaker also adds retro touches inside the new Mustang FX. Leather seats are standard, featuring plaid-like detailing reminiscent of the Fox-body era. Silver and blue dual-contrast stitching is incorporated on the steering wheel, dashboard, door panels, seats, and center console. Recaro sport seats with those same stylistic elements are available on the Mustang FX coupe.

Other interior design touches include a Mustang GT badge in the new font on the instrument panel and Dark Alley trim from the Mustang Dark Horse edition.

2026 Ford Mustang: New Color Options Across the Lineup

In addition to the FX appearance and performance packages, Ford announced two new exterior paint colors available across the 2026 Mustang lineup. Adriatic Blue evokes the teal color used on Fox-body Mustangs, while Orange Fury, last used in 2019, returns to the paint palette.

Buyers can also opt for one of three new seat belt color options: International Orange, Prime Blue, and Black with a red stripe.
