“Avoid this location at all costs — unsafe vehicle, zero accountability, and no help when things go wrong. I traveled over 6 hours from Washington, DC to the Hertz Smithtown location after being told that an Audi A4 listed through Hertz’s Rent2Buy program was in excellent condition and ready to go. When I arrived, I immediately saw that one of the tires had a large bulge in the sidewall—a serious safety hazard that should have been caught in any basic inspection. Instead of owning the issue or offering a replacement or refund, the staff told me the branch was closing soon and instructed me to drive the unsafe car to a Pep Boys to have the tire replaced. Pep Boys didn’t have the tire. I was then sent to three more locations, none of which could help. Not only did Hertz fail to take responsibility, they expected me to fix their problem, wasting hours of my time and leaving me stranded far from home with no safe transportation. The manager admitted the situation was “unfortunate,” but offered no real solution—just more tire shops to try. This experience was frustrating, dangerous, and completely unacceptable. The vehicle should never have been handed off to a customer in that condition. Based on this experience, I have zero confidence in the safety or reliability of Hertz vehicles, especially from this location. Be extremely cautious if you’re considering renting or buying here.”
